Kate Rudd does a fine reading of this early novel by Andre Norton. She demonstrates an impressive ability to convincingly dramatise the wide range of emotional tone required by the novel. The story is told in the first person by Gillan who was found as an infant survivor of a shipwreck and knows nothing of her background. As the story progresses, she is vividly brought to life by Kate Rudd’s superb narration.
The book initiates the High Hallack series and has links to the Estcarp books as well. It is well written, has a complex plot, and interesting characters. “The Year of The Unicorn” can be read as a stand-alone but it is an excellent introduction to the fascinating fantasy worlds of Andre Norton.

I was really looking forward to hearing this book, an early one…the synopsis was intriguing…but OMG was it not the most terrible reader…little girl voice and so uneducated. Reading so many words by guesswork without knowledge. Two examples come to mind…the word SHAWL…pronounced like SHALE…and the word TROD…pronounced like TRODE…WHO HIRED THIS VOICE? Please never again. She’s a poverty selection, without charisma, without expression and endless mispronunciation!

It’s an early novel and so repetitive, especially the phase…”Who is Gillian?” …by the end I truly didn’t care and was answering back to the voice, I am still uncertain if it was my response to the reader that coloured my response to the story. Needless to say this was very disappointing.
