About this listen

1969. Eloise Shepherd, one of MI6’s brightest rising stars, is working undercover in Soviet Russia as Magdalina Novikova. Her mission is to persuade nuclear physicist Stanislav Kalashnik to defect and bring his knowledge of Russian weapons back to the UK. On the verge of success, the operation fails suddenly and spectacularly.

Seventeen years later, Kalashnik is chief engineer at the power plant near Pripyat known as Chernobyl. His concerns for the safety of the plant are growing. When his views lead to accusations that question his patriotism, he finds himself in a very risky position.

Meanwhile, back in London, Eloise Shepherd’s life and career are spinning out of control when she’s approached with a one-time offer to redeem herself. The mission: to get Kalashnik over Soviet borders once more. It’s an opportunity that could change everything, and Eloise knows there’s no reward without risk. But she’s heading straight towards a danger far greater than she could ever have anticipated.

Another excellent title - more please!

A bit different to Marks other books, but I loved this story. Generally books set in the past aren’t my think but Wormwood doesn’t feel overly historical. The detail in the story is fantastic and just what you’d expect from Mark.

I hope that this is just the first in a new series!

Another Mark Dawson masterpiece!

Another new name for me from the superb Mark Dawson. I'm so hooked on the John Milton books that I wasn't sure I would like it. But, like a his other books, the genius shone through. Brilliantly narrated by Gemma Whelan.

Could not put down!

I even found myself waking up with my earbuds still in! This was a fantastic book. A very enjoyable story with a fabulous narrator. Can’t wait to listen to the next one now.

Original approach to a spy novel

Well narrated with a good pace. Dark characters that bring it all too life. Well done Mark!!!

Well presented plot.

I would have loved a few more chapters to be continued a little longer after the ex filtration to London. I look forward to part two.

Fab spy story

The story just grew & grew. My first Mark Dawson book, but definitely not my last.

Just not for me

I’ve read every book Mark has written, but sadly this one wasn’t for me. I tried - I really did but the story wasn’t there and when it was it was dull and plodding. It might just be me and it certainly won’t stop me reading other books.

Not his greatest

I just wasn't able to get into this book ! I've followed the John Milton series by the same writer but the narrator and the story were not up to scratch and I found this more than a little disappointing.
