About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Work Like a Woman written and read by Mary Portas.

By most people’s standards I would say I’ve had a pretty good career. I’ve reached the top of the ‘ladder’ and been lucky enough to have had a damned good life. But at what cost?

At the cost of who I truly was.

I played the business game for years, where the rules were set by men for men. I was tough and aggressive. I put in long hours, was competitive and resilient. But I suppressed my natural energy, sensitivity and instinct. I worked like this until I couldn’t any more. And then I changed.

My team and I rebuilt my business on the values that matter: collaboration, empathy, instinct and trust. Values not always associated with leadership or winning, but which have made every one of us feel good.

Now I want to share what I’ve learned through my own experiences, and am still learning, to change the way you work so that female energy and power will be seen as the most valuable currency in today’s new world of work.

It’s time to create an unstoppable force for change. A feminine force.

It’s time to #WorkLikeAWoman.

I loved this book from beginning to end. What an inspiring story and it a rallying cry to women that the toxic masculinity we have to deal with at work every day AND outside of work is NOT OK. And there are things we can do about it. So wonderful to hear the journey of someone as successful as Mary Portas and how powerful it was when she started to tune and listen to herself and her intuition. Female power is what we need more of in the world. Thank you Mary for showing us the way!

Just brilliant!

Mary gives it to us straight, it's time for change and she is going to lead it.
A brilliant book for any woman (in business especially). I have gifted this book to 4 people so far and will keep on sending it until we see the change we need! <3

Thank you for this gift! I needed a supportive, strong, female guiding voice whilst going through a rough time at work recently. I feel stronger and supported as a result of reading this book.

Mary Portas has such a powerful and common sense message. It’s great to hear her narrate this audio book. This should be mandatory reading for everyone from managers, husbands, women and everyone else. I hope this message gets heard far and wide because it’s about time that our world caught up to the strengths of women and how they can work I. A more equal world.

Mary Portas reads it’s so well with such passion.
Really enjoyed this. Not too heavy either. She manages to get the right balance of serious points and a easy listen. Great book that lends itself to the audiobook format.

Really well read and inspiring

It’s clear that Mary has laid everything out clear to see in this book.
If everyone made tweaks and slight changes like Mary and her company did the world would be a better place.
Well worth the read. I listened audio read by Mary which I think set the whole thing off perfectly!

A refreshing take on a problem that touches us all

Mary Portas is a born performer and it was a joy to listen as she expounded on her passion project with insightful and often hilarious experiences from her own life.

This audiobook and her podcast are essential listening for anyone who works in culture and engagement, and in fact for anyone who works.

My only bugbear was with the chapter on Mary’s own business, which was rather weighed down by a litany of values most of her employees must struggle to remember, let alone bring to life.

But her fundamental premise rings so true: we need to shake off the increasingly threadbare but still heavy cloak of alpha culture and bring our true and best selves to work if we want to build fulfilling and prosperous workplaces for the future.

I really enjoyed and got a lot out of this book - and will no doubt be driving friends and colleagues mad as I continue to quote from it. Sorry everyone but thanks, Mary.

An inspiring and witty manifesto for a more human way of working
