About this listen

In this powerful and exciting fantasy set in the world of the New York Times best-selling Others series, humans and the shape-shifting Others will see whether they can live side by side...without destroying one another.

There are ghost towns in the world - places where the humans were annihilated in retaliation for the slaughter of the shape-shifting Others.

One of those places is Bennett, a town at the Northern end of the Elder Hills - a town surrounded by the wild country. Now, efforts are being made to resettle Bennett as a community where humans and Others live and work together. A young female police officer has been hired as the deputy to a Wolfgard sheriff. A deadly type of Other wants to run a human-style saloon. And a couple with four foster children - one of whom is a blood prophet - hopes to find acceptance.

But as they reopen the stores and the professional offices and start to make lives for themselves, the town of Bennett attracts the attention of other humans looking for profit. The arrival of the outlaw Blackstone Clan will either unite Others and humans...or bury them all.

Critic reviews

"Captivating characters and rich detail... a satisfying urban fantasy." (Library Journal)

A most enjoyable alternate western with a flavour of Charlaine Harris's Midnight Texas. Now to read the next book in the series.

Excellent

This tale of the Others begins before the end of Etched in Bone, and deals with the settlement of Bennett. It's good continuity, and the overlap was interesting, a different viewpoint. And of course bad humans come to Bennett and Prairie Gold.

I found this compulsive listening. This may be partly because I haven't read the book on kindle first; but the machinations of various characters really held my attention, the more so as the story progressed. This morning, for example, I raked up leaves with my phone firmly stuffed into a pocket so I could continue with the story. I've just finished it. It was a little sad at the end, but also satisfying.

Alexandra Harris' narration is, as always, rather odd, with misplaced stresses....and her howling really is feeble... but it is what it is, and I've got used to it now. Howling still very weak, though.

Good story, had to listen

Yet another winner in the fabulous series. Whether it be the original or this spin-off I have yet to read a disappointing story. They have all been can’t put down riveting reads.

I have really enjoyed this book and the series. I may times I laughed out loud. Hope the author writes more and quickly

It isn´t often I get so engrossed in a story. Wild Country is an absolute perfection. Mean and nerve wracking perfection full of suspense. But still a perfection, full of Anne Bishop´s magic and understanding of human nature. Beautiful, warm and gripping Ode to Wonders. The wonder of imagination, the wonder of humanity, the wonder of empathy, the wonder of life … And I really feel like there is accompaniment of instruments playing along the story. But that could also just be the effect of the narrator, seriously love that voice. In my opinion Wild Country is at par with any of Anne Bishop´s books so far, might even be my favorite. After having read that a few times now, I realize that can´t be (as I have listened to the other The Others). Must either be a little high on this last book (just finished it) or … it really is this good? Have now to listen to The Others again to find out.

Absolutely brilliant

I have enjoyed all of the others series so far and lol forward to the next instalment.

Really loved this book

I was a bit disappointed with this book - it was OK but I expect more from Anne Bishop. It is basically a retelling of the stories of how the bad humans set out to overthrow the Others in charge of a town - lots of stuff to show just how bad the bad humans are - reminders of how vicious the Others are in the wild etc
The problem with it is we have heard all this before - but with more likeable characters. there were some clones of Lakeside courtyard characters but they just weren't as good or well developed and nothing to match Simon and Meg in the main series

its worth a listen if you loved the other books in this world but I would say its one of the weaker books - it lacked any spark of originality unfortunately

Alexandra Harris performs just the same as in the other books and does a decent enough job

Dont even think about reading this before reading the first 5 books in the main Others series - it is set in time starting during Etched in Bone and has spoilers but also you need the background from the other books

Bit predictable and samey but OK

Just loved this. The continued world building from the other series is brillant. Couln't stop listening.

Best installment since written in red

Good story with enough tension to make me irritated whenever anyone tried to interrupt my listening time so much so that I finished the book quickly and was then disappointed that it was finished 😅 wish there were more stories to continue the new story lines created outside of lakeside as the characters are interesting enough that I would like to spend more time living life with them

Good read with enough tension
