About this listen

The outspoken and hard-hitting autobiography of one of the most highly rated, recognisable and controversial football referees of modern times.

Mark Clattenburg found himself in the centre circle, whistle in hand, at the start of 450 Premier League matches during a highly eventful 13-year career in football's top flight.

He has shaken hands with, issued red and yellow cards to, and been sworn at by hundreds of players. He has been screamed at and shared jokes with dozens and dozens of managers. And he's felt the wrath of thousands upon thousands of irate fans.

His autobiography is the ultimate guide to what it's really like to be in the referee's spotlight. It offers numerous intriguing insights into the daily trials and tribulations, the acute stresses and strains, of a top-flight referee. Clattenburg takes the listener into the referee's room, the players' tunnel and out on the pitch to experience precisely what a referee goes through on match day.

Open, honest and a page turner

I have always liked Mark Clattenburg as a referee. He was never afraid to take the tough calls and his presence meant it was a big time match. Hearing his story was fascinating especially as it was open and honest. Highly recommended for all football fans.

Settles scores

Mark Clattenburg seems to have fallen out with a lot of people - including his mother - but he doesn’t really seem to question why. He was undeniably a successful referee, but there is no real explanation as to why. What made him different? He doesn’t really take you onto the pitch with him. Only when he talks about his mentor Pierluigi Collina do you get a sense of what makes a top referee. It’s entertaining enough for the most part, but the criticism of many of the referees around him becomes a bit dull. If he was so badly treated how did he rise so quickly?

Hear a different perspective on the game

This was very interesting but I found the swearing a touch annoying - no need for it

Thank You Mark

Finding out more about the men behind the whistle. The pressures they face and the mountains they have to climb. This was a fascinating insight behind the scenes with the world's best referee. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Great insight into Mark Clattenburgs career

I've listened to several ex football player auto biographies so this was a nice change to get an insight and perspective from a referee.

Mark seems like a top bloke and it was interesting to hear his ups and downs during his career as a professional referee.

Mark tells you his many dealings with managers like Jose Mourinho, Jurgen Klopp and Sir Alex as well as footballers Mikel, Ronaldo and the infamous Chelsea vs Tottenham match where it all kicked off as Tottenham chased the Premier League title.

good for him

The performance lets this book down a bit, kind of childish narration at times. The book itself well, it’s certainly honest. What a low blow by Chelsea to do what they did and all those petty people suspending somebody before anything had even been proved. I get that they had a kind of duty of care but surely some negotiation about how to proceed following the various allegations wouldn’t have been such a big deal. I never believe what they say in the press anyway so i never thought of him as arrogant in the first place. A very interesting book though, all that burocratic nonsense doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.
