Fourth in the Gregor Reinhardt series.

The Western Front, July 1918. Gregor Reinhardt is a young lieutenant in a stormtrooper battalion on the Western Front when one of his subordinates is accused of murdering a group of officers and then subsequently trying to take his own life. Not wanting to believe his friend could have done what he is accused of, Reinhardt begins to investigate. He starts to uncover the outline of a conspiracy at the heart of the German army, a conspiracy aimed at ending the war on the terms of those who have a vested interest in a future for Germany that resembles her past.

The investigation takes him from the devastated front lines of the war, to the rarefied heights of Berlin society, and into the hospitals that treat those men who have been shattered by the stress and strain of the war. Along the way, Reinhardt comes to an awakening of the man he might be. A man freed of dogma, whose eyes have been painfully opened to the corruption and callousness all around him. A man to whom calls to duty, to devotion to the Fatherland and to the Kaiser, ring increasingly hollow....

I struggled and persevered with the two previous recordings. I loved the story but the choice to portray Rhinehart with such ridiculous speaking voice, and narration, was maddening.

This latest is a relief in so many ways. I loved it. Toby L does an epic job and I implore the producers to book him to re-record both previous books.

God Does Not Walk is a perfect novel for audible. I am already lonely having sadly come to the end.

Congratulations. I’m so glad Rhinehart has found a voice to grow in.

I’m really pleased that there are going to be more Reinhard novels. Perhaps now the first book will be released as an audiobook. This is the 4th book in the series but is the origin novel introducing many of the motifs which run through the earlier (well later but you know what I mean ) books.

What a good story and taking us back to the start of Rhindharts career.

Now that we know this character will continue through the 1920's and 1930's I can't wait to see what adventures he gets up too.

Finally taking us up to 1943 where it all began.

The canvas is bare, let's see where Luke Mc Callin takes us.

I was drawn to this as I'm a huge fan of Philip Kerr's 'Bernie Gunther' series (book format) and this seemed to share many similarities. Other reviewers indicated it started slowly, which it does, but for me, it maintained a pedestrian pace throughout.

The story is good, as is the period detail and the scenes at the front, but IMO, it is too drawn out. It will be interesting, if they produce the first book in the series to see how the older character is presented. I did find it frustrating that Reinhardt, when required is depicted as a teenage Rambo, hardened by his brutal time in the trenches, next he's blushing at every opportunity in a social environment.

Overall, the narrator does a good job, my one issue, is the decision to use regional British accents for German characters, which is very off-putting. In summary, a satisfactory listen.

This could have been a great book but it’s far too over complicated. It can be confusing to listen to and really requires commitment to finish. The basic idea is very good but could have been executed so much more effectively
