About this listen

On the first day, she met her match. Then she killed 16 men.

Tossed into the gladiator arena, the delicate girl in the fancy pink dress should have been the first to die. Leyli had other plans. Surviving was at the top of her list. Revenge was a close second.

Having grown up behind the sheltered walls of the Oberhame Palace, she knew what the crowd wanted. She'd just become a pawn in the games of men. But why was she still alive? They'd killed her brother, the heir to the throne. Had they gotten to her father? Was the king dead?

In the cell beside her, the Lion of Lenlochlien was impressed. When he offered advice, she took it. When she kept coming back after each round, he dared to hope she'd survive. He had no idea he was about to become her best weapon.

Leyli didn't just want to live through the games, she wanted to protect her father's throne, but to do that, she had to become someone else. The Lion had to make her a Wolf.

Chained side by side, he'll show her how to be a killer. She'll give him a reason to keep fighting. Together, they'll learn it takes a friend to survive.

I enjoyed this book. Finished over the course of a week. The main characters are likeable though the plot is a little predictable. It was a nice easy listen.

I look forward to reading / listening the rest of the series.

Enjoyed

Performance: Justine Eyre is, as usual, an amazing narrator.

Story: Princess to Gladiator, with all the violence that comes along with it. The story is not a romance as much as a fight together towards freedom. There is no meet cute, lattes, or steamy scenes. There are some wounds that are sewn up and some noses broken though.

Overall: Unlike many of Auryn Hadley's books... this book ends with our main character still as a virgin. There is only one love interest (at least so far) and he's being a gentleman. When We Were Kings ends with a Happy For Now.

Entertaining fantasy!

Good story after you get over the truly unbelievable start of her first kills. Narrator was clear and read well.

Good story

A bleak and violent world where debtors are made into gladiator slaves and forced to fight to the death.
Some ignoring reality is required to fully enjoy the story—a pampered princess becoming a successful gladiator.
The romance is a fantastic slow burn with a man who's good to her from the start. So much tension with them unable to act on their feelings.
The narrator was good once I got used to her voice.

A hidden romantic fantasy gem

When I started this book series, I was quite low on my expectations. But I loved them all. The female characters are no heaps of emotional mess but strong.

I was sceptical but loved it.

This is a story about a princess who is kidnapped by her cousin and sold on as a slave, later to appear in the gladiator arena, where she meets Tristan, the Lion of Lenlochlien, who takes her under his wing. He teaches Leyli everything he knows to survive the arena and whilst they start to fall in love with each other, their relationship remains platonic.

No surprise that they form a bond together. Then they are separated when Leyli is sold onto another slave dealer.... All this and she is on the run from assassins.

This is a slow burn love story/fantasy mix which is very easy to listen to with very likeable characters. I am a little unsure about the narration, but maybe it will grow on me.

Not a Bad Start

I hadn’t heard of this book before and I didn’t jump straight into it because to be quite honest the cover looked a little naff 90’s BUT this was excellent. Great storytelling, strong female lead, good narrator all lead me to finish it in just over a day. Very much recommended especially if it’s in your free library

Don’t judge an audiobook by its cover
