About this listen
Five years ago
The summer air was thick with the scent of blooming jasmine, which lingered on the skin long after the sun dipped beneath the horizon. Music from the town fair floated in from across the lake soft, distant, like a lullaby that didn’t know it was breaking two hearts.
Catherin sat on the hood of Christopher’s rusted old Chevy, her knees drawn to her chest, chin resting on them. Her dark curls tumbled over her shoulders, catching the golden flecks of the setting sun. Christopher leaned beside her, elbows on the roof, eyes fixed on the horizon where the water met the sky in endless blue.
They had always said forever. Scribbled it into tree bark. Whispered it under blankets. Promised it in notes passed between classes. But forever is a word better said than lived.
“You’re going?” Her voice cracked despite her effort to sound calm.
He turned slowly, searching her face like he memorized it. “I got the scholarship, Cath. Johns Hopkins. You always told me not to let anything stop me.”
