"Three dead coppers, Tom, maybe four by lunchtime."

The targeted murder of four officers is only the first in a series of attacks that leaves police scared, angry and, most disturbingly of all, vengeful.

As Tom Thorne and Nicola Tanner dig into the reasons for the violence, a deeper darkness begins to emerge: the possibility that these murders are payback. The price paid for an unspeakable betrayal.

To uncover the truth, Thorne will be forced to question everything he stands for. He can trust nobody, and the shocking secrets revealed by one terrible night will fracture his entire world.

Was a brilliant listen
Have enjoyed all the Tom Thorne books
And is he really going to retire?

Never saw that coming

Wow - this is the best of Tom Thorne to date. A thoroughly engaging, and, at times, shocking storyline. An intricate plot, building up until the tension is positively fizzing. Mark Billingham always delivers, but this is another level - I need to lie down in a darkened room to digest and recover!

Blown Away

There was a tiny bit of me which wonders if this series would go off the boil after Mark went off in Dec Miller’s direction for a bit.

Oh how wrong I am, and I’m delighted to have been so.

This is an outstanding addition to the series with a twist which had me gasp out loud.

Oustanding stuff, I barely hit pause

This has to be in many ways the darkest Thorne yet.The denouement is gut wrenching and you are left wondering at what point Bellingham constructed this story line-here and now or a while ago as a fascinating potentially earth shattering ending to the series.
Where we go from here is anybody’s guess.
Bellingham has a new protagonist in another series but whether they continue in tandem remains to be seen.
Billingham’s own narration adds to the overall effect and whatever happens Tom Thorne remains a powerhouse detective creation.

A Thorne Tour De Force

Decent plot but Mark narrating his own book wasn’t such a good idea The characters lacked some definition and for some reason the plot lacked some tension

Get a proper narrator

Talk about a cliffhanger and explosive ending. even better that i just couldn't work out who it was until the reveal. Another masterpiece, just hoping its not the end of Tom Thorne. Had to chuckle , I really show my age as I totally get why Tanners cat was called Mrs Slocombe lol , it made me laugh out loud !

What !!!

Another excellent book from Mark Billingham. The Tom Thorne series has been a joy to read/listen to. Mr Billingham also narrates his own work beautifully. I do hope there's going to be more. Highly recommended.

Love Tom Thorne
