About this listen

With the staggering intensity of James Lee Burke and the absorbing narrative of Jane Harper's The Dry, We Begin at the End is a powerful novel about absolute love and the lengths we will go to keep our family safe. This is a story about good and evil and how life is lived somewhere in between.

You can't save someone that doesn't want to be saved....

For some people, trouble just finds them. Thirty years ago, Vincent King became a killer.

Now, he's been released from prison and is back in his hometown of Cape Haven, California. Not everyone is pleased to see him. Like Star Radley, his ex-girlfriend and sister of the girl he killed.

Duchess Radley, Star's 13-year-old daughter, is part-carer, part-protector to her younger brother, Robin - and to her deeply troubled mother. But in trying to protect Star, Duchess inadvertently sets off a chain of events that will have tragic consequences not only for her family, but also the whole town.

Murder, revenge, retribution.

How far can we run from the past when the past seems doomed to repeat itself?

We begin at the end

I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this to start with. But it grew on me and by the end I really appreciated what a good story it was
Narration suits the story

Compelling, heart breaking and a wonderful read.

A gripping story with beautifully drawn characters, very sympathetically narrated. Really loved 'We Begin at the End' by Chris Whitaker.

Great storyteller

Chris Whitaker is such a great storyteller. This book is packed with characters and has a plot full of twists and turns. There are a lot of red herrings ..maybe too many . I didn't really like any of the characters.,even Duchess . My main criticism is that the chapters and sections are very short. In a book there would be spaces to mark a change of scene . The narration doesn't pause in between sections and this can be confusing at times and make it feel bitty as it jumps around . Loved the descriptions of the countryside .

Really moving story brilliantly told

If you want an antidote to the puerile US of Trump and Musk read this subtle, painful yet ultimately life affirming view of small town America. The novel has many twists and turns yet always manages to engage and touch the reader. A very special book

Harrowingly sad but beautiful

This audiobook nearly broke me. I wasn’t sure I could finish it but I was unable to quit.
So much tragedy and sadness but a little light to banish the shade.

Fantastic story hampered by awful narration

First, I highly, highly recommend this book. The book. Not the audiobook. I listened to the audiobook and so very nearly gave up on it many, many times, because the narrator / reader read it so badly. But the story is so good, please buy the book!

The story is wonderful: moving, thoughtful, beautiful, human and real. I will certainly be looking at the author's other works - he is a masterful storyteller.

But it's almost as if the narrator hasn't prepared for this job at all; as if when he's reading it to us, it's the first time he's seen the text. He simply doesn't know when to lend emphasis to a word or phrase to back up what the author intends, so unfortunately, it can be very difficult to follow the story. He also inserts pauses where they make no sense, and doesn't pause where it's needed most - between scenes. The narrator's 'throw away' style makes it appear that he's more concerned with making nice music with his voice than engaging his brain and telling the tale. Such a shame.
Read the book.

We begin at the end

I agree with previous reviewers, it take some time to get used to the narration. I did have to slow him down a pace to understand him, but you do get used to it. Fabulous story 5 stars.
