About this listen
Michael Morpurgo’s classic tale, capturing the power of the human spirit.
Beautifully performed by Dan Stevens, ‘War Horse’ has taken the world by storm. First published back in 1982, the book was adapted to the stage and was performed at the National Theatre and on Broadway.
At the outbreak of World War 1, Joey, young Albert's beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France.
He's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a treacherous mission to the trenches to find him and bring him home.

What made the experience of listening to War Horse the most enjoyable?
I saw the stage version of War Horse last Friday in Cardiff I had read the book when it was first published and because the stage performance is so amazing I was distracted from the characterslistening to the story reminded me what a powerful story it is
What did you like best about this story?
the truth and contraststhe understanding between Albert and Joey
the horror of war and WW1in particular
the shining examples of kindness and humanity form all sides
Have you listened to any of Dan Stevens’s other performances? How does this one compare?
noWas there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Emily's grandfather mourning his little granddaughter and yet able to see Albert as the best keeper of JoeyAny additional comments?
With the anniversary of WW1 approaching I have spoken with my grandsons and encouraged them to reread War HorseMy grandfather survived WW1 yet like many others never spoke about his experience he was a farmer and always had a special care of his horses
