About this listen

Winner of the Edward Stanford Adventure Travel Book of the Year 2016.

From the best-selling author of Walking the Nile, explorer Levison Wood begins his next challenging adventure - walking the length of the Himalayas.

Levison Wood's most challenging expedition yet begins along the Silk Road route of Afghanistan and travels through five countries. Following in the footsteps of the great explorers, Levison walks the entire length of the Himalayas in an adventure of survival and endurance.

A personal story of discovery, Levison forges strong bonds with local guides, porters, mountain men, soldiers, farmers, smugglers and shepherds. By travelling on foot, and following the same footpaths that locals use, he uncovers stories that might otherwise remain hidden. Along the way he also reveals the history of the Himalayas and two millennia of exploration, and examines a continent in crisis in the 21st century.

Packed with action and emotion, more than anything Walking the Himalayas is a story of personal adventure and striving beyond the limits of convention.

Critic reviews

"Bestselling author of Walking the Nile Levison Wood is "bewildered" by being called a sex symbol, as a death-defying trek through the Himalayas is set to have fans' pulses racing." ( Daily Mail)
"Britain's best-loved adventurer... he looks like a man who will stare danger in the face and soak up a lot of pain without complaint." ( The Times)

Levison specializes in truly epic walks and this one is no exception. And even better, Levison narrates this one! Levison’s great ability is to bring the human interest side of his walks across in a really engaging matter. You feel like you are there with him. You feel you understand the issues of the various maintain tribes people.

Levison’s voice is distinctive but very interesting. He is especially funny when doing his ‘grumpy voice’ to voice some of the grumpy officials he meets.

Looking forward to the next one and please Mr Wood read the next one yourself!

I remember watching the documentary that Levison Wood made about the journey. Hearing his words in full without the constraint of a television programme timeframe was all I hoped it would be. What a journey to undertake. Such determination. Also the story of reconnecting his friendship with a Nepalese “brother” from his youth was heartwarming.

Excellent.

As usual Levison demonstrates his ability to describe his adventure with some panash and lucid moments that should live in the memory. "It's not about the getting there but about the people I've met along the way" and "if you can just appreciate breathing" sums up for me why his travel writing is amongst the best.

Excellent travel writing.
