About this listen
This is the second book in the Virus series, which parallels the SIMPOC series.
A suspicious virus has killed 99.99997 percent of the people. A ruthless warlord who moved into the White House attacked the government at Camp David. The president moved the remaining government to an aircraft carrier in the Atlantic and left a military unit to deal with the warlord.
The decimated US Navy is still functional. They must defend themselves from the remnants of militaries with a grudge against the US that use the opportunity to get revenge.
Joan Herl and her remaining space station Oasis crew returned to Earth, and a computer playing by different rules attacked them. Their only ally was the first thinking computer SIMPOC and his surrogate Alpha. Dr. Julius, who was one of the moon colony crew members, steals the research for thinking computers, and with his expertise he creates another computer that rivals SIMPOC and who starts making its own plans.
Eventually, they all find out why the virus started and who is responsible.

The narration is great. I like it in terms of both the way that it sweeps the story along and also the way it brings the characters to life.
A really great audiobook!! One of my favourite in fact. Such a good story!!

A virus, 100% lethal to all who contract it, mysteriously and simultaneously broke out around the world leaving a surviving population estimated at only one to two hundred thousand, the majority of these being on vessels at sea. In addition to these people, there are a handful of humans in settlements on the Moon and Mars but, without ongoing Earth supplies, their futures look unsustainable and they have to decide whether to remain where they are or attempt to get home.
In the US, the President is a leader 'without people to lead'. The threat of even more destruction, this time between survivors, is present as remnants of nations still maintain old style political grudges and fears. Plus two new beings, thinking computers, the first of their kind and very different by virtue of their separate creators, are fast growing in power and understanding of the world they have come to inhabit. Friends, or just another blow to the remnants of humanity?
This wide ranging and detailed story moves between locations and major players, seeing the situations, as they arise, through individual eyes and it constantly presents the reader with the question, ';What would I do?' George Napier's narration and production is excellent, with protagonists individually and clearly voiced (including the different computers!), the connecting text read with clarity and good intonation, and sound effects throughout adding to the frightening feeling of reality. It really is a fully rounded performance, an audible experience not just a reading. Very impressive. As the various groups begin to interact more fully, the excitement and tension mounts until ...
Well, you'll have to read the book to find out what happens.
Best read after the initial story, which tells of the development of SIMPOC and of the viral outbreak worldwide, but this is not essential.
Highly recommended.
It is I, Alpha. It is I. SIMPOC.
