Lichterfelde, 1943. Vera erlebt den Zweiten Weltkrieg in Berlin in der Villa am Karlsplatz. Ihr Mann Wilhelm, ein überzeugter Nationalsozialist, ist bei der Luftwaffe. Immer öfter kommen Vera Zweifel, auf welcher Seite sie steht. Da findet sie in der Gartenlaube einen fremden Mann auf der Flucht. Es ist der jüdische Künstler David, der in die Illegalität abtauchen musste und sich seitdem versteckt hält. Vera trifft eine weitreichende Entscheidung, von der sie weiß, dass sie ihre Familie zerreißen und alles in Frage stellen wird, was sie bisher für richtig gehalten hat. Doch in Zeiten des Hasses, erkennt sie, liegt die einzige Hoffnung in der Liebe.
