About this listen

A superpowered collision of extraordinary minds and vengeful intentions - number-one New York Times best-selling author V. E. Schwab returns with the thrilling follow-up to Vicious.

Magneto and Professor X. Superman and Lex Luthor. Victor Vale and Eli Ever. Sydney and Serena Clarke. Great partnerships, now soured on the vine.

But Marcella Riggins needs no one. Flush from her brush with death, she’s finally gained the control she’s always sought - and will use her newfound power to bring the city of Merit to its knees. She’ll do whatever it takes, collecting her own sidekicks and leveraging the two most infamous EOs, Victor Vale and Eli Ever, against each other once more.

With Marcella's rise, new enmities create opportunity - and the stage of Merit City will once again be set for a final, terrible reckoning.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Good story however not very original. Would recommend it.

Entertaining Story

I enjoyed this book, I just didn’t love it quite so much as I did Vicious. I think there were just too many plot lines to follow and I really didn’t gel so much with the new characters. I listened to the audiobook and we had a different narrator than book one, and though he did a good job, he wasn’t as great as the narrator for Vicious. Still a good listen and I will happily devour book three when it arrives.

Good story, but not as great as book one

This one was a bit of a mess. Jumping timeline, plot focusing on one character, only to forget about them for a very long time. Main characters from the last book disappeared for so long, I almost forgot about them. Because of that, the middle part felt chaotic and was losing my focus. I didn't like not knowing who the main character was.
This, plus some poor voice choices, made me think I would give it 4 stars.
But finale was very well planned, with high tension and not obvious ending. I liked it very much. It even made all previous editing choices look better.

Bit chaotic, but with fine finale

Narration- why did they change the narrator from the first one?!?! Considering this book is very female character lead, why wasn’t a narrator who could either do a good female read or even a female chosen… every time he put on female voice, the character would sound like they’re on helium but still have a dull deep voice! Or “she” would sound like an old lady with someone holding their hands round her neck! For the main male voices, he was ok.

The story… There was a lot going on. I feel the story about Marcella and June was put in to pad the book out for Eli and Victor… I felt the book wasn’t about either sets of characters… however i still kept listening, I still kind of liked it and I wanted to know what would happen next…

The big finale scene was written well and so easy to picture! I just don’t understand all the hate between the characters….

Not as good as the first… but if you read Vicious you will read this…

This book, to me, is perfection.
I very rarely give five stars, but V.E. Schwab's second installment of the Villains saga certainly deserves each and every one. Intricate plots that work out like clockwork, driven by a very-dark-grey kind of hero and an equally compelling cast of thoroughly fleshed out characters, are exactly my cup of tea. V.E. Schwab's style is maturely polished and well balanced, yet it sounds fresh, immediate. Her voice is sharp and clear. This story drags you in and quickly becomes an addiction. Please, Ms. Schwab... show us more about this cruel, breathtaking universe. We need more of your Villains.

Simply amazing

I enjoyed Vicious, but Vengeful took the villains series to the next level. I found a new favourite with each character introduced, and listened in writhing anticipation for the moment that each party collided - and was not left disappointed. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys (responsibly) consuming media full of dark characters and relationships with a side of complicated found family and plenty of dry humour.

A fantastic read, full of humour and tension

The sequel of this series has a different narrator. Unfortunately this one adopts a whiny, breathy tone for every single female character (of whom there are more of now) and muddles the accents he puts on between lines.

The story itself is still enjoyable. The characters from the first book remain, joined by some interesting additions. Lots of build up in this book without any real pay off or conclusion though.

Note: Change of narrator
