After successfully solving the case of the missing girls in Delft, Master Mercurius has made a name for himself as a private investigator. With unrest occurring both nationally and internationally, William of Orange is obsessed by plots against his leadership. He calls on Mercurius to help to spy on state officials. But before Mercurius has a chance to investigate, his colleague at the University of Leiden is killed. And when one of William's men is also murdered, Mercurius suspects there could be a serial killer on the loose....

Alex Wyndham is a very entertaining narrator and his style of delivery is well matched to the Master Mercurius novels. Aside from his performance I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first in the series, Murder In Delft, but it was still decent enough. There was a lot less atmosphere to the writing.

This fast moving plot allows just enough time for adequate character development as Mercurius romps through 17th century Netherlands as a reluctant detective
Graham Brack's sense of humour flourishes with witty asides as this sequel builds on the solid foundations of Death in Delft.
Alex Wyndham also delivers a fine audio performance
I finished this audiobook in less than a day (it is not a long audiobook)
I eagerly await the next installment

Mercurius is up there among my favourite characters and we are two books in. The writing is witty without labouring the comedy or taking away from the plot and the narration excellent.

My second meeting with this lead character and I loved getting to know him better. Love the humour, the language and the sense of time and place. Will definitely be getting the third book.
