About this listen

Have you ever passed a secret note to a friend in class using a made-up alphabet? Or whispered a message in pig Latin, hoping only your best friend could understand? If you’ve ever hidden a message in plain sight or used a secret language just for fun, congratulations—you’ve already explored the exciting and mysterious world of cryptography!

Cryptography is the science of keeping information secret and secure. It’s one of the oldest and most fascinating fields in human history. Long before computers, satellites, and smartphones, people were using secret codes to share information that had to be kept away from prying eyes. From ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics to encrypted war plans during World War II, the desire to keep secrets safe has always been a part of human life.

But cryptography isn’t just a subject for history books or spy movies. Today, cryptography is all around us. Cryptography works behind the scenes to protect your data when you send a message on WhatsApp, check your bank account online, or log in to your email. It keeps hackers from stealing your passwords, ensures private conversations stay private, and guards the digital doors to our online lives.

So, what exactly is cryptography? At its core, cryptography is about turning ordinary information into something unreadable—and then back again, but only for the right people. Imagine you write a message in English and then mix the letters using a special rule. To everyone else, it looks like nonsense. But if someone knows the rule (a “key”), they can turn it back into a standard message. That’s the basic idea behind most codes and cyphers.
