As a book for people who do not know much about neurodiversity or are looking to better support someone in their life this is comprehensive and thought provoking.
It does sadly read a little like a user guide to a problematic car, while not incorrect factually it’s hard to read as an autistic person with ADHD who has worked very hard to ensure my needs are just as important (cautiously not more important) than the people around me, without outing myself as a person with different needs.
I’m not a pet to be looked after, and i understand that if my partner for example always put my needs first, they’d be looking after me, not living in partnership with me.
So please read of you’d like to know more about autism and ADHD from a function, societal perspective (there is no psychology or neurology here) the intention of the author is clear - shift the perspective from deficit based models to a more balanced view.
In many ways this book achieves those goals, but in others it can require of the reader that they use their own judgement and experiences as an interpretive guide to what the author is trying to say.
For perspective:
This book is written at a time when autism and adhd are emerging from a misunderstood, stereotyped quagmire into a difference to be respected and accommodated for, in the same way that more “typical” needs are accommodated for without thought or question.
These ARE the thoughts and questions, I guess if you wrote a guide to “looking after your neurotypical person” it would read much the same, which would be amusing.
The idea is that one day these too will not need to be voiced to be accommodated.
Overall, my thanks to the author for their work. I hope my criticism is viewed in the spirit it was intended and does not detract from the positives.
I love the depth of knowledge and care
