Un condenado a muerte anónimo decide escribir en una especie de diario las últimas horas de su vida. La incertidumbre, la soledad, la angustia y el terror se suceden en un relato que finaliza justo cuando la ejecución va a producirse. A través del sufrimiento del narrador, conel que llega a identificarse el lector, la novela niega cualquier valor positivo a la pena de muerte: es injusta, inhumana y cruel, y la sociedad que la aplica es responsable de un crimen como cualquier otro.

Poeta, dramaturgo y novelista francés considerado el máximo exponente del Romanticismo en su país. La infancia de Victor Hugo transcurrió en Besançon, salvo dos años (1811-1812) en que residió con su familia en Madrid, donde su padre había sido nombrado comandante general. De temprana vocación literaria, ya en 1816 escribió en un cuaderno escolar: «Quiero ser Chateaubriand o nada».
