About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Ultimatum by Frank Gardner, read by Rupert Farley.

SIS agent Luke Carlton returns in the explosive, action-packed and unerringly authentic new thriller from BBC Security Correspondent Frank Gardner, author of the acclaimed number one best seller Crisis....

Deep within a cave system at the Iranian military complex of Parchin, southeast of Tehran and hidden from the prying eyes of Western satellites, scientists are working round the clock on a banned device. Acting on the orders of a renegade cell within the ultraconservative Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, their intention is to propel Iran into the elite club of nuclear-armed nations - and seal its domination of the Middle East.

Britain’s intelligence agencies know something is up - they have a mole inside the programme. Ready to hand over the information, he must first get out of Iran. Crossing the mountainous border into Armenia, he was due to rendezvous with MI6 agent Luke Carlton at a remote snowbound monastery. But the mission goes bloodily wrong, and Carlton has to be extracted. And fast.

On the back foot after that fiasco, MI6 is suddenly presented with an opportunity - to recruit an individual with unique access to the leader of the IRGC hardliners. And Luke is chosen to reel them in. Going into Iran undercover is dangerous enough, but the real nightmare begins when a senior British government minister on an official visit is kidnapped, his close protection officer is killed and Britain is presented with a terrifying ultimatum. And as the only agent inside Iran, it falls to Luke Carlton to head off what could lead to a catastrophic confrontation in the Gulf...and the clock is ticking.

Frank writes superb spy thrillers. Each one is set in a different theatre; this one, Iran.

It is to be hoped that Frank will continue to narrate future works based on his Luke Colton character. The latest, Invasion, is superbly read.

Gripping and original

Another superb story from the Author whose research is always evident. Realistic, exciting and compelling the excellent narrator brings this topical story alive. Our hero survives again, of course and I look forward to the next adventure. Keep it going Mr Gardner as you are a great story teller.

Possible Realty

I thought his first story, Crisis, was excellent, but this one was outstanding, it had suspense, contemporary politics with reality cleverly woven into fiction and a thread of emotion in the hero’s personal life which made the book even more believable.
Please can we have some more, I’ll be at the head of the queue to read it.

Frank Gardner’s stories just keep getting better!

Frank Gardner writes books that leave you on the edge of your seat! Brilliantly written and chilling.

book you can't stop listening to

Not as good as the first one. Plot unlikely and unbelievable. Luke not cut out for the job

Unlikely

There is suspending disbelief but this goes too far. Spoiler alert - the central relationship between LC and the "daughter" is devoid of any reality. There were parts that were quite gripping and the detail of the Ops planning etc was insightful, but overall I thought plotting was not great and ending a huge anticlimax parts of which were utterly pointless such as the "duaghter" scene. Narration and performance however, was excellent.

Expected better

Frank Gardner has all makings of a great action adventure author. Ultimatum is certainly an improvement on his first book but again suffered from a hurried and unsatisfying ending. Although concludes the main story leaves lots of loose threads that may be resolved in book 3. With so much detail given in some parts the last few chapters felt rushed and compressed as if the publishers were putting on pressure for the finished book. Also Gardner needs to find a better reader. Two miss-hits so far. He needs a quality regular to lift the narrative from the page.

Good but not great

A great listen from start to finish and one you just can’t stop … just another half hour more and before you know it hours have passed. Brilliant plot and story and a great knowledge is shown by the author. I thought book 1 was good but this is even better..!! Loved it and looking forward to the next instalment.

Fantastic listen…

A very good listen. Written by someone who has probably been in some tricky situations. Frank’s narrative was very believable. There are some evil people out there. Recommended
