In dieser Abhandlung untersucht Voltaire mit dem Ursprung des Übels ein für den christlichen Glauben grundsätzliches rationales Problem.
In seiner Religionskritik stellt er den traditionellen manichäischen und christlichen Gottesvorstellungen seinen rationalen, deistischen Gottesbegriff entgegen. Weiterhin geht er auf den überlebenswichtigen Sinn von physischen Leiden wie Schmerzen und Tod ein und korrigiert schließlich einen landläufigen Irrtum über moralische Übel.
