About this listen

Do you want a thriller that grips from the first line?

Do you want a thriller to leave you gasping for air?

Connor Laird frightens people: he's intense, he's fearless, and he seems to be willing to do anything to protect himself and those he loves. He arrives in the Longacre Children's Home seemingly from nowhere, and instantly becomes hero and villain to every other child there.

Thirty years later, someone is killing all of those who grew up in the Longacre, one at a time. Each of them has secrets, not least investigating cop DI Ray Drake.

One by one the mysteries of the past are revealed as Drake finds himself in a race against time before the killer gets to him.

Who is killing to hide their secret?

And can YOU guess the ending?

Complicated story so you need to focus!

Very clever plot with multiple characters and twists. Found the narrator a bit pacy at times

Very twisty

Cleverly written and brilliantly narrated. I really enjoyed this audiobook. The characters have great depth which added to my enjoyment. The author takes you on a journey through the past in order to solve a murder in the present.

Mind blowing experience

Helter-Skelter - Twists and Turns. And just when you thought you knew - You realise you don't - Then just when you thought it had ended, you realise it hasn't.

The narrator takes you to a whole new experience of AUDIBLE!
And the story takes you to a completely different dimension!

What a mind-blowing experience

Complicated but entertaining

Firstly, I am grateful to have been able to listen to this one included in my membership and am always conscious of this when leaving a review but...

Narration is good - not great. Flics sister at one point had quite a strong Australian accent and then at a later point had not a hint. Some of the voices weren't quite distinct enough to be memorable and the plot was SO complicated that made it tricky in places (for me).

Storyline - Soooo complicated! I am a huge fan of crime drama and listen to audible all day, every day so know my stuff! This book has so many characters; which makes it hard enough to follow AND two periods of time to flip back and forth. I will admit I am no spring chicken but my brain really struggled to keep up in places and I lost the plot on more than one occasion. I always find characters who act stupidly very frustrating (like running down the middle of the road when being chased by a car) and this book has elements of that.

Overall - initially, I thought I had found a new author/detective to follow but I don't think that I will continue with others as, to be frank, I simply don't like the D I Drake character or think he is remotely feasible as a detective in real life and I like my fiction to be set well and truly within the realms of reality.

Beautifully written and perfectly performed

I really enjoyed this book except its last 5 minutes which left me rather deflated and somewhat disappointed. Still, ‘I wish it ended differently’ is merely my personal preference and doesn’t take away from this work’s value. As far as crime/thriller audiobooks go I found it an intelligent, gripping listen.
