About this listen

The future holds nothing but blood and death… and Teia fears there is nothing she can do about it. Read by Allan Corduner, who trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and has appeared on stage in Passion at the Donmar Warehouse, Serious Money in the West End and Titanic on Broadway, and on screen in Yentl and Topsy-Turvy, amongst many other roles. He is a highly experienced voice actor and memorably narrated the voice of Death when reading The Book Thief. He has read Elspeth Coopers' Wild Hunt novels for Orion.

The first book in this series was nothing short of amazing. This second book just seems to wander... Too many characters introduced late into the series. I'm bought into the storyline so I will carry on with book 3, I just hope it is more focussed

Book two of a four(or more?) book series. Really enjoyed the first & I was keen to see where the characters ended up after the cliffhanger at the end of the first. Frustratingly almost the first third of this book dealt entirely with a new character - I had to check several times whether I was reading the same series. Eventually the threads rejoined & I enjoyed the rest of the book & was eager for the third.

That says it all - good but not a patch on book 1. Plus 2 real negatives. First, the hero seems to have changed from an extremely likeable young man into a sulky petulant Pain in the neck. I don’t think it’s necessarily the best idea to keep the main character and give them a bit of a personality transplant. Secondly, the first book was well in the young adult category, but the graphic and violent sex in places in this second book was really gratuitous and unnecessary and would certainly take younger listeners by surprise

another great book loved it only negative side is it fills like a filler to the third book which would be fine if i could get the third book now and find out the story unfortuneitly not thou really did enjoy it but felt as thou many questions were left unanswered from the 1st book cant wait for the last 1 just wish this had more info on the main character from the 1st book

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I found this 2nd book a little boring, after it finished and I began contemplating the story I thought I had been given a lesson on feminism, I'm not keen on being lectured about the stupidity and arrogance of men and the strength, intelligence and wisdom of women!

What about Allan Corduner’s performance did you like?

I love the way Allan Corduner tells a story, I believed all the characters and his voice has a warm quality that does not grate on ones nerves.

I really enjoyed book 1, and was left disappointed with this second book, Gair has become a sulking, petulant character whom I lost sympathy for and his story does not start until half way through the book, I was expecting this book to be as good or better than the first, but sadly it was not, I don't think I will bother with the 3rd.

Great read, continues to build the story, and a few more characters introduced, could of done with abit more about who Gair is, and just more Gair. READ IT.

The story was spoiled at the start by the continuous and graphic sexual abuse of certain characters. The same understanding of the suffering could have been achieved without going into such details. Fortunately it did cease and the story continued from the first book and I settled down to enjoy it. I notice that there are no other titles by the author so the cannot continue. I wait in anticipation for the next installment.

I like the way Elspeth Cooper writes, how the world and the characters are described. Narrators voice was nice and I was amazed how fast my days at work went when I was listening to this. I am happy that I can listen to these books in english because these are not available in Finland.

This is a great book 2, but, still, falls victim of 'Book 2 Syndrome'. The plot stumbles a few times and seems to run in place in parts.

Quick synopsis: The story splits into 3 main POVs - Gair, Tanith and Teia. Elspeth Cooper's female characters are wonderful - complex, brave and flawed.

Gair battles with his song in the aftermath of the attack and the death of his lover. Tanith is torn between her love for Gair and her duty to her people. Teia: Teia is wonderful: inspiring, strong and brave.

This review is written after I've read Book 3, so I can see why the book was paced as it was. At the time of reading, though, I found it a bit frustrating.
