About this listen

When Charlie Flint is sent a mysterious package of cuttings about a brutal murder, it instantly grabs her attention. The murder occurred in the grounds of her old Oxford college - a groom battered to death just hours after his wedding. As his bride and wedding guests sipped champagne, his alleged killers were slipping his bloodstained body into the river.

Charlie doesn't know who sent the package, or why, yet she can't get the crime out of her head. But as she delves deeper, and steps back into the mysterious world of Oxford colleges, she realises that there is much more to this crime than meets the eye.

I used to be a huge Val McDermid fan but then her books started to lack the erudition, twists and turns of her earlier work. Then the books seemed to descend into a lesbian crusade. Trouble with that was that the books became predictable as any gay character couldn’t be the ‘baddie’. This book deals with VM’s gender and gay equality priorities but she has returned to building these into a well constructed story.

Better than the my couple VM listened

Brilliant story line, with plenty of curve balls thrown in to keep you guessing to practically the end!! l read other reviews before listening to this & have to disagree with the narrow minded reviewers!! The gay community are NOT overly talked about in this story but they ARE necessary or the story would not work!! Also well narrated. I found when I was younger I wasn't overly keen on this author but have recently rediscovered her & love her talent.

Brilliant

The story takes its time to get going, and sometimes focuses on the gay aspects to the detriment of the whole. Once up to speed the tale is intricate and we'll constructed.

I was completely gripped by this story with its powerful characters and intriguing plot twists.

McDermid at her best

This was a decent enough yarn; yet, falling short of what you would describe as a gripping read. It was unusual in the fact that all of the main characters are lesbians. This is fine & I had no issues with that. It was just the ?old girl? network; that I felt made the plot a tad twee. Nonetheless, I am sure that the lesbian community would welcome some main stream literature, where lesbians vastly outnumber the heterosexuals for a change. Overall, I would recommend to other readers.

Different

I really enjoyed the way the story unfolded from the perspective of the different characters.

It was a murder mystery delivered from a different perspective.

The story is complex & interesting. It carries you with it to just the right degree ... very slowly you get a sense of who is involved, but not until the end is it clear who, how & why.

Ignore the prudish reviews.

Great read - one of McDermid’s best

What a read!! I did think I had solved it but there was something missing and then the story twisted again. Loved it. Always thought that there was something off about Lisa ! Then the story unfolded. Superbly crafted. Thank you Val. Another great read.

I thought this was a highly entertaining and gripping tale. Great twists and a feeling of impending doom throughout!

Such an original story!

A reasonably good 'listen' (the Audible equivalent of a reasonably good 'read') which kept me happy whilst walking the dog for a week or so. But as with many of the more recent books of Val McDermid, coincidence seems to play too great a part in the narrative. 'I never saw that coming' is not a phrase many will use at the end of the book.
