Here's something a little different, and not your usual action packed sci-fi. Focusing on Jake as he progresses through his accounting course at an academy he received a scholarship to attend, he finds himself caught up in accusations of smuggling and murder - and with no idea what to do ends up on the run. Moriarty gives an enjoyable story here, though not without some small issues, mostly relating to the pacing and differences of style from start to end. What I thought would be a light and funny story turned into something a little darker, yet the writing didn't quite move in the same way. Still, it's an easy listen with a good narrator and I'm definitely interested in listening to the second in the series.

Jake, a hardworking young belter, is at the Merchant Academy on a scholarship. Poor and naive, he earns extra money by selling academic work to other students, an idea suggested by his wealthy friend, Bart, who also get him an insurance job, boring to most people but not Jake. But a false accusation leads to Jake's having to abandon his college course and go on the run.

This is a light comedy romp of the private fear and innocence versus betrayal, lies, murder, cynicism and wealth of corporate individuals. Sort of funny pathetic. Good basic concept and some nice futuristic ideas, like food coming in microwave colour codes trays, red, green and blue being the cheapest. A fair bit of technical detail but not overly intrusivd. But seriously lacking in character development which fitted with the flat, almost cartoon feel of the writing, and is further conveyed by the fine narration of William Turbett. Trans Galactic Insurance - the title alone makes this worth several stars - is a quick, easy fun read which is replete with head turning twists as it nears the conclusion but which would have benefited from better editing earlier where I am sure there were minor contradictions but which one as insufficiently motivated to go back and determine.

I enjoyed the story (which, for some inexplicable reason made me want to re-read Harry Harrison's very differently delicious Stainless Steel Rat), and am glad to have read it, but have no desire to continue the series.

This is new to me, as of now this book is more of a mystery or a detective story including insurance fraud, railroading and murder in an academy, and it all falls on a naive kid names Jake a student on a scholarship which now without money is on the run.
The author Andrew Moriarty is writing a good story as of now only that as of now this story could have happened everywhere at any time and the only reason for saying that it’s a Science fiction is because it happens on insuring space ships cargo instead of tracks but it still a good start for a four books series.
While an excellent narration William Turbett also uses a different voice for each character beautifully, the author sure have chosen a good one !

I had this book on a wish list for months and I eventually got it over the holiday season. I found this universe that Andrew created to be absolutely fascinating. I have no idea how someone like Jake came to be and I was rooting for him the whole book. I think I will be joining Jake on his adventures in another book one day

I enjoyed this book with its myriad of twists and turns. The situations that the main character kept landing in were almost predictable, especially with him being so gullible and trusting.

All in all a good start to the series which I will be continuing.
