Anche dopo il suo ritiro a vita privata, sir Charles Cartwright, un tempo il re delle scene, resta un personaggio illustre. Durante uno dei suoi esclusivi ricevimenti, si verifica uno strano episodio: uno degli ospiti, un timido e pio pastore protestante, muore improvvisamente. Polizia e medico legale si trovano d'accordo nell'indicare, come causa del decesso, un infarto, e anche Poirot inizialmente non sospetta di nulla.
