About this listen

Award-winning author Juliet Marillier's "lavishly detailed" (Publishers Weekly) Blackthorn & Grim series continues as a mysterious creature holds an enchanted and imperiled ancient Ireland in thrall.

Disillusioned healer Blackthorn and her companion, Grim, have settled in Dalriada to wait out the seven years of Blackthorn's bond to her fey mentor, hoping to avoid any dire challenges. But trouble has a way of seeking out Blackthorn and Grim.

Lady Geiléis, a noblewoman from the northern border, has asked for the prince of Dalriada's help in expelling a howling creature from an old tower on her land - one surrounded by an impenetrable hedge of thorns. Casting a blight over the entire district, and impossible to drive out by ordinary means, it threatens both the safety and the sanity of all who live nearby.

With no ready solutions to offer, the prince consults Blackthorn and Grim. As Blackthorn and Grim begin to put the pieces of this puzzle together, it's apparent that a powerful adversary is working behind the scenes. Their quest is about to become a life-and-death struggle - a conflict in which even the closest of friends can find themselves on opposite sides.

Beautifully written

It's such a sinister story that's got me on the edge of my seat shouting at my phone.

Totally enthralling

I read the first book in the series, so it took me a while to get used to voices that weren't as I imagined them, but I did a lot of chores that would not otherwise have been done just to have an excuse to keep listening!

Juliet Marillier's writing is beautiful and evocative, the characters are gripping, and the slow reveal of backstories is done in a totally masterful way. You could step straight in at book 2 in the series, but book 1 will give you a lot more understanding of the why's of this tale.

A good story, but it laboured throughout

This book was a not as good as the first in the series, so was disappointed, it need more characters or storylines for this length of a book, it just sounded like it was repeating itself after a while. It only succeeds on the premise of the first book, after you get to know the characters, so it' kind of rides on the back of book 1. it certainly isn't a good stand alone read. However, that said JM is a good author. But do hope the next in the series is better.

Enjoyed hearing more of Grimm’s story

Such a great series, looking forward to listening to the final instalment. Excellent choice of narrators again, I love Grimm and Blackthorn’s narrators and the new narrator for this episode fit well too.

Wonderful storytelling

Brilliant, complex and fascinating story. Great characters but spoiled by American accents in Ancient Britain!

Life's Too Short

Ended up giving up on it. It's not a terrible book but it's repetitive, every few pages the author decides to remind you through the character's introspection what they've been through, why they want revenge, how or why they've failed or are constrained. OK already, I got it the first 5 times it was mentioned. Seriously it felt like each time the book's viewpoint changed it all had to be rehashed each time, for each character, and because this is a first person narrative it comes across as whiny and makes the characters unsympathetic. I'm not sure if this was an aspect of all the repetition but the pacing was off and the booked dragged, I wasn't compelled to listen through to the end, I got bored and kept putting it down.
Secondly, the narration was poor. Why use Americans in a book set in ancient Ireland? That jarred straight away. The male narrator was less bad and had a better range of voice and expression, but when the females were narrating [supposedly there are 2, though you wouldn't know it] it was flat and you couldn't tell one character from another or where speech ended and narrative began.
If this hadn't been on BOGOF offer I'd return it and I won't be getting any of the author's other work.
