About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before.

'Beating people up in little rooms . . . he knew where that led. And if you did it for a good reason, you'd do it for a bad one. You couldn't say 'we;re the good guys' and do bad-guy things.'

Koom Valley, the ancient battle where the trolls ambushed the dwarfs, or the dwarfs ambushed the trolls, was a long time ago.

But if he doesn't solve the murder of just one dwarf, Commander Sam Vimes of Ankh-Morpork City Watch is going to see it fought again, right outside his office.

With his beloved Watch crumbling around him and war-drums sounding, he must unravel every clue, outwit every assassin and brave any darkness to find the solution. And darkness is following him.

Oh . . . and at six o'clock every day, without fail, with no excuses, he must go home to read 'Where's My Cow?', with all the right farmyard noises, to his little boy.

There are some things you have to do.

The Discworld novels can be listened to in any order but Thud! is the seventh book in the City Watch series.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

Somehow not as funny as many of his stories and fewer twists. But a lot of clever ideas as always.

Fantastic performance. Good story but not his best

A very well written story read by a pleasant voice. You can't help but enjoy it.

Another classic!

A fantastic interpretation of the characters in one of Pratchett’s best Vimes’ stories. Culshaw is excellent. Well worth listening to, even if you’ve read or listened to the story before.

Brilliant reading

One of Terry’s best brought books to life brilliantly. I would throughly recommend everyone read/ listen

Great Story

For me, Jon Culshaw will always be the voice of the Watch. His depictions are spot on, allowing you to visualise the characters... especially Nobby Nobbs. And is it just me, when I hear Sam Vimes I picture Sean Bean...???

Another excellent tale.

I love this story the only thing I wasn’t totally sold on was the voice for Brick the troll - everything else was brilliant.

Really good, one minor niggle

Thud! Is a masterpiece in a collection of Pratchett masterpieces. It may not be the outright funniest, but it reflects deeply on society without being burdensome and it adds so much feeling(s) to the story and exploration of the characters. Parental love has never been better showcased.

The narrator does an excellent job on Vimes specifically, helping the listener connect to the character.

As usual it would help to know the rich backstories of all the characters to fully understand the Discworld universe and the development seen in both them and the reflection of the author in their work. If facing the risk that only one Discworld book might ever be read/listened to however, this would be the one I'd want anyone to read.

Terry Pratchett at his best
