Young Jody lives with his ma and pa on a farm in backwoods Florida. Life is hard there: cutting wood, planting fields, hauling water from a distant sinkhole. I absolutely loved this book. I seem to remember reading it as a teen but without much pleasure but then the Sunday Times said it had been re-released so I gave it another go. What a joy! I was there with Jody, Penny, Ora, Julia & the other dogs, Flag, the Forresters, Fodder Wing, Slewfoot, every step of the way & with every last detail of a year in Baxters Island. Truly Magical.
