About this listen

THE FIRST IN A STUNNING SERIES, THE COUSINS' WAR, FROM INTERNATIONALLY BESTSELLING AUTHOR PHILIPPA GREGORY

Set amid the tumult and intrigue of The War of the Roses, Philippa Gregory tells the story of one woman's ambitious ascent to royalty during the unsolved mystery around her sons' imprisonment in the Tower in a captivating family drama.

Elizabeth Woodville is a common woman who ascends to royalty by virtue of her beauty. A woman who rises to the demands of her position and fights tenaciously for the success of her family. A woman whose two sons become the central figures in a mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the Princes in the Tower. Their fate remains unknown to this day.

From her uniquely qualified perspective, Philippa Gregory explores the most famous unsolved mystery, informed by impeccable research and framed by her inimitable storytelling skills.

Whyyyy the music at the beginning of each chapter?

This would have been immeasurably better if it were read without the jarring and unnecessary blasts of music.

Good listen

Overall I enjoyed this novel, albeit a tad on the whimsical side. Good story however and well read.

Fox is a dull little mouse...again...

I have a very mixed view of Phillipa Gregory and historical fiction generally but once you've read all the political and military history, and taken in your Shakespeare's history plays(the epitome of historical, I guess), you don't have anywhere else to go to get your fix. I am very keen to discover as much as possible about the women in the cousins' war, all of whom seem to have played crucial roles.

Audible seems to have started a nasty habit of releasing abridged versions of audio books and then sometime later releasing an unabridged recording, often by a different reader or cast. I think I should get my money back for the abridged version of the White Queen as I have just had to purchase the unabridged version. What can I say? I like books and prefer to read or listen to them in the way the author intended.

As for this version of the White Queen, if was utterly spoiled for my by the 'performance' of the over-rated, over-employed Emilia Fox. I must be great to belong to an acting dynasty but whilst the girl can just about hack playing dull yet attractive juvenile leads on tv, she simply can't act well enough to narrate novels with the skills and complexities that that involves. She completely destroyed Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love (one of my all time faves but no thanks to her!) The sequel was redeemed by the peerless Patricia Hodge reading Love in a Cold Climate. Now that woman is an actor - that means she can play characters other than herself. I have yet to hear Ms Fox manage that with any of the characters she is presumably meant to be bringing to life in her readings. Get rid, please.

loved it

This is my favourite historical fiction audiobook.
The narrator is perfect and I love the little short medieval musical interludes at the start of each chapter.
The story was great and full of diverse well written characters.
i listened to this book 3 times over the last couple of months on my lockdown walks.
A fascinating story.

Excellent and Relatable

Well read account of Philippa Gregory's wonderfully thought out first person rendition of the Wars of the Roses. This makes a very complicated and hard to understand era of history accessible and relatable.
