About this listen

** WINNER OF THE CRIME & THRILLER BRITISH BOOK OF THE YEAR 2023 **

* THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER*

It's time to solve the murder of the century...

Forty years ago, Steven Smith found a copy of a famous children's book by disgraced author Edith Twyford, its margins full of strange markings and annotations. Wanting to know more, he took it to his English teacher Miss Iles, not realising the chain of events that he was setting in motion. Miss Iles became convinced that the book was the key to solving a puzzle, and that a message in secret code ran through all Twyford's novels. Then Miss Iles disappeared on a class field trip, and Steven has no memory of what happened to her.

Now, out of prison after a long stretch, Steven decides to investigate the mystery that has haunted him for decades. Was Miss Iles murdered? Was she deluded? Or was she right about the code? And is it still in use today?

Desperate to recover his memories and find out what really happened to Miss Iles, Steven revisits the people and places of his childhood. But it soon becomes clear that Edith Twyford wasn't just a writer of forgotten children's stories. The Twyford Code has great power, and he isn't the only one trying to solve it...

Perfect for fans of Richard Osman, Alex Pavesi and S.J. Bennett, The Twyford Code will keep you up puzzling late into the night.©2022 Janice Hallett (P)2022 Profile Books Ltd

Brilliant

It’s really hard to to praise some of the best aspects of this story without giving away a ton of spoilers but let’s just say my emotions were all over the place; I spotted clues but had no idea what might matter and what was a red herring, at one point Steve’s story was really heartbreaking and at some points I laughed out loud at the author’s audacity. This is also a book where the narrator carries a very heavy burden in terms of characterisation. He does it so well that once, something really important to the plot flickered through my mind but I actually decided I was being unfair and forgot about it.

A great book

Another great book by Janice Hallett. I wasn’t sure how it would work as an audio book having read the appeal, but was really curious - it was a great listen. I disagree with other comments about the narration, I thought the narrator was good, and also makes sense when you listen to the end

Stick with this!

As this read went along I got completely hooked with the storyline as well as the reader’s voice, which was just right for telling this tale. The book was also most disconcerting for me initially, but I found that I quickly get drawn into style which kept me guessing what would happen next right to the end. Loved it!

Agree, not for audible

A very clever story which needs to be read on a hard copy to enjoy to the full

Very enjoyable

Best story I have listened to in ages. I really got into it. I preferred it to the Appeal which is also good. Great narration too.

This annoyed me for the first few chapters but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Really good stuff

Audiobook looses something in translation

I went into this after "the appeal".

It's everybit as complex and enjoyable

However, without giving to much away, I think while The Appeal still worked well as an audiobook this looses out because do much of codes are text based.

I feel this would be far more enjoyable as proper hard back you can jump some in

I liked it!

I, for once, really enjoyed the narrator's voice and performance. Good story, will look for more books by the author.

Excellent story

Very well written story. I’d have preferred to have had a hard copy of the book as I feel I may have missed some clues from the text but excellent twist and really made me think. I love that relationships are at the core of this book.

Confusing

I wasn't going to finish this but someone told me the end was worth persevering for. I found the structure confusing and found the characters also confusing It was all a bit remote and my least favourite of this author's books. It is very clever and turns everything you think you know around constantly but i found the cleverness and twistiness a bit tiresome. Now i want to read an excellent straightforward novel with one narrator and a decent, linear plot!!
