About this listen
Discover a new series of whodunits by million-selling author Faith Martin. These charming mysteries will have you scratching your head to work out who the murderer is.
Meet Jenny Starling: travelling cook and reluctant amateur detective.
Please note this book was first published as Just Not Cricket under Faith Martin’s pen name Joyce Cato.
Jenny Starling is doing the catering for the village cricket match. But she’s not expecting one of the players to turn up dead.
Everyone from the village has turned out to watch the match, and with this being the club’s centenary, Jenny Starling has been hired specially to provide her stunning food for the event.
Then the next man up to bat, Tristan Jones, is nowhere to be found. He is discovered behind the pavilion, murdered by a blow to the back of the head with an old cricket bat.
The handsome 20-something had a reputation as a Lothario, with an appetite for married women. Did a scorned woman or a cuckolded husband kill him?
However, he’d annoyed other people too. He was a stockbroker who took big risks with other people’s money and lost their life savings.
Soon another body turns up and Jenny Starling is going to need all her cunning to crack this complex case.
This is the sixth in a series of enjoyable murder mysteries with a great cast of characters and baffling crimes which will keep you in suspense to the very end.
Perfect for fans of classic whodunits by authors like Agatha Christie, LJ Ross, TE Kinsey, and J.R. Ellis.

Light and ridiculous
Narration was fine and easy to listen to. Storyline ....well it was okay light easy listening but the whole situation was just ridiculous really. Trying to be I guess a modern day Miss Marple but somehow i didnt think it quite worked. Didnt really warm to any of the characters either, including all the main characters. What really amazed me was as a cook why would you prepare everything at the scene? Especially the amount she had to bake,,,,it would have taken days and then she's surprised that it's all got to be done in a single oven! Surely she would have established that in the first place....its just those sort of things that are silly. First and last time I listen to this series.

Another exciting listen
Although I did guess who the murderer was, it wasn't until just before it was revealed, and after the evidence was plainly explained. These are really well written and brilliantly narrated.

It was okay as a light listen
i only enjoy these as a gentle story between heavier or meatier reads.
I found this one more grating than the previous books in the series. There's an immaturity to the character (wanting to cook a BBQ despite grizzly murder etc) that starts off as quite endearing but bulldozes it's way to irritating.
It's a cosy type accidental detective piece. Its not supposed to be super serious and I never try to listen to them in that way but I found this one a bit too ludicrous at times.
Even so... it was reasonably well narrated and a decent enough listen to fill some time.

A weak story with strange characters
I love murder mysteries but this one was a real disappointment.
The characters are so stereotypical that they border on being offensive or just annoying.
The plot was so thin, no development or depth of motive - boring.
I did enjoy descriptions of cooking and food preparation beautiful and enjoyable.

To long and keeps repeating it self. I have read Faith Martin books before and enjoy them but not this.
