About this listen

Peter Carey's The Tax Inspector is a wickedly funny satire on modern life and families.

The day that Benny Catchprice was fired from the spare parts department of Catchprice Motors by his aunt Cathy was also the day that the Tax Inspector, Maria Takis, arrived to begin her long-overdue audit of the family business. But this is no ordinary investigation. Maria is eight months pregnant, Granny Catchprice is at war with her offspring and Benny, her grandson, wants to become an angel.

It's a great novel. His most autobiographical, it's hugely imaginative, with supremely well handled plot and character and showing his sheer love of writing. He's generous with the scope of the novel, more minor characters are all fully realised. I have lots of favourite scenes, for example Serkis' mother telling him to 'get food' when their neighbours throw potatoes at them, the dinner party, the Bilgola house. When I miss Sydney I read this book. Superlatives are inadequate when it comes to Peter Carey's imagination.
The reading was very good, with a couple of mistaken emphases here and there.

The book was boring, the narrator was boring, it was never satisfying, and deeply unnerving at parts.
