About this listen

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde ranks alongside Frankenstein, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Dracula as one of the top horror stories to emerge from the late 19th Century. Film and stage adaptations have never been able to fully relate the agony and conflict that permeates the mind of Dr Jekyll, but the audio version read by Ian Holm adds an extra spine-chilling dimension to the original text by Robert Louis Stevenson.(P)1994 CSA Telltapes Ltd. Wonderful reading!

Took me a while to adjust but now I know “Jekyll” is pronounced to rhyme with “treacle” I’m kind of obsessed! A brilliant, humane, meticulously voiced reading by Ian Holm.

Great version. Better than Grant's version

Clearly spoken and great expression. Recommend for those doing GCSE and for listening in the car on holiday.

A Classic Completed

Obviously I have seen many film incarnations of this story and so felt there'd be no surprises. But I was surprised. it wasn't the salacious, boardy, gratuitous horror of the films and TV series. Instead it was a well composed thriller with mystery and morality. RL Stevenson knows how to spin a good yarn.

Jekyll and Hyde

If it were seen by a reader in the 1800s they'd find it horrifying and mysterious. Nowadays it is book of superb literature, along with other narratives by great authors.

Narration is amazing

The narrator is great!!! He brings emotion into the text and breathes life into the words. I think I enjoyed the story more because of this.

Ian Holm brings the horror

I've read Jekyll&Hyde a number of times and even written a thesis on it for college, but Ian Holm reintroduced to me the horror of this story. His hushed whispery voice gives the impression of a world of night, in which our gentlemen sneak and scurry, terrified of having their secrets revealed, with shame and social ostracism to follow. Modern readers know the twist and therefore the mystery is blunted, but with Sir Ian I was there every step of the way, watching as Utterson's quiet dread mounted.

This is an incredibly evocative story, chock-full of atmosphere. It contains all the fears of its contemporary society, the fear of violent crime, of mental illness, of homosexuality, and of the hidden depths of the self that psychologists were beginning to explore. The prim and proper middle- to high classes lived in dread of their own passions and urges. Dr Jekyll decided to live his out to the fullest, and it ends in tragedy. This is great horror. If you haven't yet heard the original text of this story, give this version a go.

Great telling of a classic story.

Ian Holm is fantastic as the narrator. Only issue with this recording is the sudden spike in volume when chapter 3 starts!

A superb story read by an accomplished actor

A superb story from one of the greatest spinners of tales. No dramatisation does it justice: it needs to be read, or read to you by an actor as accomplished as the late Ian Holm.
