“Klassen expertly infuses her … inspirational tale with a gothic atmosphere, resulting in a sweetly intriguing romance worthy of Victoria Holt.” ( Booklist)

A Beautiful Novel

A very good novel, beautifully written and beautifully narrated. Remined me a little of Jane Eyre, one of my favourite novels of all time. Very cleverly written and many twists and turns near the end. I love this author, and this is the fourth of her novels I have listened to. But this one and the Painter's Daughter had the same effect on me, I couldn't stop listening. Both books have really good stories, and I would highly recommend them both. Lovely and calming to listen to, and a lovely bit of escapism. Just beautiful! 🤍 📚

Captivating story of love and family relationships .

Sympathetic study of life of a young woman in the rigid social order in regency Britain.
The uncertainties created by dependence on financial support and strict rules of inheritance, glimpses of tragedy and fragility of life. Happiness achieved at last in a diverting and satisfying story.

Treacly

I put up with the religious mumbo jumbo because Julie Klassen normally tells a good story. This was not up to her usual standard. The end was nauseatingly mawkish.

well written, complex plot, very enjoyable

I like the depth of the story, it was not a vehicle for multiple sex scenes, but a well rounded story with engaging characters.

A very satisfying conclusion

I very much enjoyed this story with its multilayered storylines and socially diverse cast of characters. Well written with a definite feel of the classics. Easy to understand and not too flowery. I especially enjoyed how every single strand to this story was neatly woven back into the whole and expertly tied off.
