About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
From the author of Sunday Times #1 bestsellers COLDITZ, SAS: ROGUE HEROES and THE SPY AND THE TRAITOR . . .
On April 30, 1980, six heavily armed gunmen burst into the Iranian embassy on Princes Gate, overlooking Hyde Park in London. There they took 26 hostages, including embassy staff, visitors, and three British citizens.
A tense six-day siege ensued as millions gathered around screens across the country to witness the longest news flash in British television history, in which police negotiators and psychiatrists sought a bloodless end to the standoff, while the SAS – hitherto an organisation shrouded in secrecy – laid plans for a daring rescue mission: Operation Nimrod.
Drawing on unpublished source material, exclusive interviews with the SAS, and testimony from witnesses including hostages, negotiators, intelligence officers and the on-site psychiatrist, bestselling historian Ben Macintyre takes readers on a gripping journey from the years and weeks of build-up on both sides, to the minute-by-minute account of the siege and rescue.
Recreating the dramatic conversations between negotiators and hostages, the cutting-edge intelligence work happening behind-the-scenes, and the media frenzy around this moment of international significance, The Siege is the remarkable story of what really happened on those fateful six days, and the first full account of a moment that forever changed the way the nation thought about the SAS – and itself.
‘Macintyre does true-life espionage better than anyone else’ John Preston
'The pre-eminent historian of the secret world . . . His books have set the gold standard for accurate historical reporting, but read like heart-pounding thrillers' Mick Herron
'Masterly . . . it has never been recounted so pleasurably as it has been here' New York Times

Excellent
Loved this book which tells an extraordinary story and is beautifully read. So interesting to learn about the Iranian Embassy siege and how it was brought to an end.

Gripping!
I really enjoyed the way this audio book was delivered. I was a child when the siege happened so actually wanted to know what really happened and not just the fragments of my memory. It was gripping without being sensationalist. 10 out of 10!

Brilliant narration and great context
Read very well by Ben Macintyre as per his previous books (Colditz etc). I really enjoyed the wider context given on Iranian politics, snooker, 1980s life in general and personalities of all involved.
Detailed as always, very much recommended.

Another fascinating, very well written, story.
The problem with any of Ben Macintyre’s books is that they come to an end. He is an intelligent, interesting writer who obviously does proper research into his subject and is a natural storyteller. Now I have to wait for the next book.

Incredible
I have watched, listened and read everything about the Iranian Embassy siege, having been totally obsessed with it since watching it live on television when I was eight.
I thought I knew all there was to know but this book proved me very wrong. The details are astonishing and the narration and story completely gripping.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Brilliant telling of a major moment in history
This was well researched and told. You become so absorbed you can smell the smoke and hear the explosions of the rescue.

A superb, matter of fact recount
Aside from the authors incredible prose, the humanity of the story and the context, Ben’s narration brings the whole thing to life. I was gripped for the entire book, even extending my car journeys to sneak in a few more minutes.
