About this listen

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who first appeared in publication in 1887. He is the creation of Scottish born author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. A brilliant London-based detective, Holmes is famous for his intellectual prowess, and is renowned for his skillful use of deductive reasoning (somewhat mistakenly - see inductive reasoning) and astute observation to solve difficult cases. He is arguably the most famous fictional detective ever created, and is one of the best known and most universally recognizable literary characters in any genre.

Conan Doyle wrote four novels and fifty-six short stories that featured Holmes. All but four stories were narrated by Holmes' friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson, two having been narrated by Holmes himself, and two others written in the third person. The first two stories, short novels, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887 and Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the beginning of the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine in 1891; further series of short stories and two serialized novels appeared almost right up to Conan Doyle's death in 1930.

Excellent

It should go without saying that as these are Sherlock Holmes stories they are excellent. I am delighted with the quality of the narration. It’s a mammoth reading and the narrator did a superb job with well differentiated voices and accents. It was a joy to listen to it.

Amazing narration

This narrator is absolutely the best. I was almost convinced at some point that there was at least three different people doing the narration.

Could have been better

Enjoyable overall but not the complete collection I had expected. Half a dozen or so stories are inexplicably left out. The performance is also strange, with words like 'Progress' pronounced in the American fashion and, halfway through 'The hound of the Baskervilles' Sir Henry loses his American accent, only to regain it towards the end!

Not Stephen Fry

Narrator makes a valiant effort but the Stephen Fry version is the benchmark for excellence in my opinion save your money and listen to that one.

The Narrator Makes Such Difference

I also have the Sherlock Holmes Collection narrated by Stephen Fry. But I really didn't like his narration. He makes it sound like the book is all about him and his voice and the story is secondary. I was very disappointed. But I have now bought a Sherlock Holmes Collection that is narrated by someone I've never heard of and it it's so much better. I am really enjoying listening to the stories. The narrator is Stephen Scalon. I far prefer his narration. With the Stephen Fry book I gave up listening. But with the Stephen Scalon narration I listen every chance I get. Much, much better in my opinion. It shows how crucial the narrator is to whether an Audio book is enjoyable or not. Good idea to listen to the sample to try and get an idea.
