The two main characters are so opposite. The plot rolls along not letting you understand where it is leading. Typical Irvine, full of graphic sex detail which can be disturbing to some readers. The narrators are brilliant at performing and making you feel these characters are so believable.

big fan of Irvine Welsh. It was a little hard to get used to the narrator being American as in my head Irvine Welsh books should all be read in Scottish so a little disappointed to start. the story unfolds and you get to know the characters it becomes an excellent read. I love the performance and don't think you could of found anyone to do a better job. the book is not for everyone crude and rude and with a dark sense of humour but definitely has a story to tell and worth sticking with to the end.

great book worth a read

Simply classic IRVINE WELSH

I love Irvin Welsh. He's a literary genius of the modern age and he renders tales of foul - mouthed and violent scumbag junkie criminals into masterpieces of literature. Kind of like Banksy or Jean - Michel Basquiat, his art is very much of the street in its urban grittiness made beautiful. This novel is different in a number of ways. Firstly the main voices are American (very American) and secondly they are female. The themes are sado masochism, narcissism, body image, success and location. This cocktail is mixed to produce a very potent assault on the ears and a visceral commentary on some of our more vacuous modern obsessions. However, much as I adored most of the novel, I did feel it could have been improved if pared down to a tighter length - like poor old Lena it needed to lose some flab, so I've shaved one star off but like Lena and Lucy there's a wonderfully taut Welsh novel in here somewhere amidst the blubber.

In some respects the story holds the usual Irvine Welsh narcissistic main character who has some serious issues to work through. I almost gave up on it until I was hit by a massive twist which re-energised my interest in the story.

A good story but different to Irvine’s normal form

As an avid fan of IW I always look forward to his new books and whilst I prefer his work when it's centred in Edinburgh I still enjoy the twists and turns of everything he writes.
This was typical Welsh, a brilliant and often macabre sense of humour shines throughout. Brilliantly narrated, if you like Welsh you'll enjoy this.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

i would have preferred Lorelei king to have narrated more of the book, i struggled with Penelopes harsh and overly angry voice, which is appropriate for some of the book but feel softer tones are also needed

no but i would be intrigued enough to watch it at home if it was on tv

a great write, a confusing title and all wrapped up too quickly after investing so much time in the read.

Disappointing, as I generally love Irvine Welsh. Not the narrator's fault. A struggle to perserve with to the end and with a rather pointless and uninspiring story line.
