About this listen
Agatha Christie’s classic novel featuring Superintendent Battle and ‘Bundle’ Brent.
Gerry Wade had proved himself to be a champion sleeper; so the other house guests decided to play a practical joke on him. Eight alarm clocks were set to go off, one after the other, starting at 6.30 a.m. But when morning arrived, one clock was missing and the prank had backfired with tragic consequences.
For Jimmy Thesiger in particular, the words ‘Seven Dials’ were to take on a new and chilling significance…

"Her gift is pure genius." (Observer)
"An amusing, exciting, well-written story." (Outlook)
"All signs indicate that Mrs Christie has been reading P.G. Wodehouse, and she does it very well in spots. This is her gayest thriller and mustn't be missed." (Books)

Another car journey made interesting
I really enjoyed listening to this as I drove to and from my brother's house. It's a light hearted Agatha Christie with a strong female lead. I thought I knew who had done it, changed my mind, and then found out I was right all along. The very end was a bit of a surprise, though. It is read clearly and with expression

Audio perfection
An absolutely excellent reading of an Agatha Christie mystery. Emilia Fox is superb at clear characterisation and the pace is spot on. The audio quality was consistent and clear throughout, with no noticible changes of pace or style.
I had not read this book before so the audio version was a delight, with Christie providing a 'subtle'plot. :-> Plenty of characters, some intersting locations and more red herrings than a Finish dinner party. Audio perfection!

Not Agatha's best
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. I don't believe it is to Agatha Christie's usual standard and rather point a friend to some of her better mystery novels.
What will your next listen be?
Another of Agatha's novels.

A weak Christie rendered palatable by Emilia Fox
This was quickly written by AC and, well it shows. However Ms. Fox does a very creditable performance and I am reminded of her recording of What didn't they ask Evans?

Classic Christie thrill!
Would you listen to The Seven Dials Mystery again? Why?
Yes definitely, because I think you always miss some details on the first listen, by hearing it again, you get a fuller picture and more enjoyment.
What did you like best about this story?
It keeps you hooked from the beginning, the characters are all interesting and individual, classic characters which add up to a full story, the descriptions of the settings, how the story unfolds and plays out is very cleverly written. I thought for sure I had guessed who dunnit but was surprised with the reveal at the end. It evoked an essence of the period before the age of mobile phones and social media and makes me wish sometimes that life was still that simple. Loved this book and will be getting the next Inspector Battle story.
Which character – as performed by Emilia Fox – was your favourite?
All the characters are wonderful and Emilia Fox read them brilliantly. Even the way she pronounced Alarm clocks as Alarum clocks! really good, I loved Jimmy Thessinger but Lady Eileen Brent (Bundle) was a strong woman who feared nothing and took anything on to get to the truth. She was my favourite. An early role model for women of today.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
The only emotion I felt was one of joy, I loved listening to the story and really didnt want it to end. It made me laugh in places but overall because it is a great story with a fantastic plot, one of Agatha Christies best I think. Really glad I chose this book.
