The ogre in this short story is not the dumb, mindless monster of the fairy story, but rather a kind, generous, hopeful and maybe a touch nieve creature.

Jack is a good kid whose lost his way, his stupid decisions could have ruined more than his life, but without the ogers wife and magical goose, could have resulted in the loss of life needlessly.

I definitely chuckled out loud when the ogre and Jack's mother agreed that he needed to make reparations for all his misdeeds through the years. Jack's mother is the perfect demonstration that unconditional love does not mean unconditional forgiveness and when the chance comes to make Jack earn his redemption, his mother is there to encourage and help push him in the right direction.

Jim Spring lends a gentleness to the ogre that really helps you warm to the character.

I really enjoyed this take on Jack and the beanstalk.
