About this listen
1961. On a sweltering summer’s day, while her family picnics by the stream on their Suffolk farm, 16-year-old Laurel hides out in her childhood tree house, dreaming of the bright future she can’t wait to seize. But before the idyllic afternoon is over, Laurel will have witnessed a shocking crime that changes everything.
2011. Now a much-loved actress, Laurel finds herself overwhelmed by shades of the past. Haunted by memories and the mystery of what she saw that day, she returns to her family home and begins to piece together a tale of three strangers from vastly different worlds – Dorothy, Vivien and Jimmy – who are thrown together in wartime London and whose lives are fiercely and fatefully entwined.

'Morton has obvious star power.... Her novels are Australia’s most successful exports since Colleen McCullough’s “Thorn Birds” stormed the world in 1977.' (The New York Times Book Review)

Quite a few reviewers mentioned the narration. The narrator came up with lots of wonderful voices but wasn't always consistent and I felt, on occasion, was well and truly overdone. The narration was dramatic to the point of being melodramatic but then seemed insensitive to full stops and lost the drama of the next statement.
I also found the narration very plodding. Crank the speed up to x1.2 and it makes a significant difference. Once you get used to the narration, you can put if behind you and bask in the story. Lady Gwendolyn was just a bit too much, though.
Despite my reservations about the narration, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.
Set the narration aside
