'A powerful standalone spy thriller from a true contemporary master' Daily Telegraph

Trying to investigate the Secret Service is like trying to get rid of the stink of dead badger. Hard.

For two years the government's Monochrome inquiry has produced nothing more than a series of dead ends.

The Service has kept what happened in the newly reunified Berlin under wraps for decades, and intends for it to stay that way.

But then the OTIS file turns up.

What classified secrets does it hold? And what damage will it create?

All Max Janácek knows is that someone is chasing him through the pitch-dark country lanes and they want him gone.

WE ALL HAVE JOBS TO DO IN THE DAYLIGHT. IT'S WHAT YOU DO IN THE SECRET HOURS THAT REVEALS WHO YOU REALLY ARE.

A proper prequel to Slough House. This fills in so many blanks and tidies away ends you didn't know you cared about. as ever Mr Barrett engages all your senses with his delivery, can't be faulted.

Another brilliant spy thriller

Great to hear the background story to Lamb and Doran. Shame the other characters were rather flat and couldn’t quite live up to the Slow Horses.

At last another Mick Herron

low on slow horses involvement but nevertheless superb. Wonderful tired cynicism in the narration and a mystery cleared up.

outstanding

I have to admit to getting a bit fed up with Sean Barrett’s drawl. The beginning of this book is slow to take off and if it hadn’t been for some positive reviews I would have given up. That said, I’m glad I stuck with and if you know the Slow Horse series you’ll know who all the characters are and it is an interesting if slightly thin backstory.

Stick with it - sticky start but ok in the end

Superbly constructed, paced, and written. When you add in the humour and the exceptional performance of the narrator, I honestly believe anyone listening to this audiobook will be as bereft as I when it finished.
Highly recommended.

Excellent

An entertaining prelude to Herron’s world of spooks that stitches events in a newly unified Berlin to familiar players in the world of The Park and Slough House. The convolutions are not too arch and the narrative delivered by Sean Barrett is excellent (although there are narration restarts missed in editing).

You’ll probably enjoy this if you like the Slough House books.

Another superb story by the brilliant Mick Heron Incomparably narrated by Sean Baratt This is a great pairing that does full justice to Herons Slough House series The book is gripping from start to finish as is the revelation of the “back story”Of some of the Slough House Spooks So disappointed to finish it More soon please Mr Heron!

Although I did enjoy this book it took me a bit of time to get with it my attention would laps.. the diction in it, I’m positive is correct and proper the irony and humour was missed on my first go round .. I’d have to skip back.. this is totally my issue and books like this just remind me how much of a savagery my accent and vocabulary are

Attention can’t laps

It took a while to get in too but I absolutely loved it when I got in to it. The back story was interesting and shone some light on our usual beloved characters.

Another brilliant yarn!

This could well be my favourite of Mick Heron’s books. The story is intriguing and it’s a great idea to get some the back story to some of the Slough House characters. The dialogue exchange between characters is simply brilliant and seems to get better with each book. Sean Barrat’s performance is as always equally brilliant and really brings the story to life. Hopefully Mick is already hard at work on the next book, which can’t come soon enough.

Fantastic
