In 1754, renowned maker of clocks and automata Abel Cloudesley must raise his new-born son Zachary when his wife dies in childbirth.

A gift at times and a curse at others, it is nonetheless these visions that will help him complete a journey that he was always destined to make—to travel across Europe to Constantinople and find out what happened to his father all those years ago.

Worth a Read
This is an unusual, wierd, sad journey over a life time by Abel & Zachary Cloudsley and all who come into thier lives.
I enjoyed listening to this novel, the descrptions of the surroundings, clocks and automators are so realistic that I became completely immersed in it. It is a wonderful story and definately well worth a read.

What a gem of a story!
I knew nothing about the writer or the plot prior to listening to this book, grabbing it because it was in a 2 for 1 deal. What a serendipitous find! An easy and enthralling read, and both (?) narrators were superb. I actually feel guilty about not paying the full price. I’ll look out eagerly for any future works by Sean Lusk.

Beautifully written and involving story with humor , love and pathos . The story of enduring love and loyalty with originality and brilliant characterization . Well narrated too .

Beautiful & original
So many elements to the story; love, adventure, clockwork & automatons, gifted children, strong women way ahead of their time, the odd and ultimately wonderful Samuels 😀 This is not a plot spoiler quite, but Ibrahim on a white horse OMG; nearly pushed me over the edge. Loved it. Never knew where it was headed. Could have gone for several more hours I’d have been happy enough 😁

Good but frustrating
I think this book is good but I found the fact that it jumped through big chunks of time grating. I do understand why it was written like that but it felt like as I was just getting into the description of one particular time or place the chapter would end. That’s just a personal thing though, I love books that really go into the world building and I just struggled to get into the book fully. It’s still a good story , it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Magically mundane
The magic quality of this story is so expertly woven into the mundane nature of life it is wholly believable to be real. The complexities of the story were well balanced in explanation and shifts in time. Each moment dwelled upon just the right amount.

Loved it!
I wasn’t sure of this book but I’d heard about it on ‘Between the covers’ and thought I’d give it a go. It very quickly sucked me in. I loved the characters, thought them believable. A very enjoyable listen. Great narration too!

Fabulous book
I just couldn’t stop listening. I loved the characters all of whom were well drawn. It reminded me of Charles Dickens in a good way.

Unusual and enjoyable read
Very enjoyable listen. I don’t usually like multiple narrators but this struck the right balance and the female narrator really brought the character of Mrs Morley alive. It’s an unusual tale but very imaginative and the characters are memorable and likeable.
