Pete McCarthy
About this listen
As a veteran traveller, Pete McCarthy has long been intrigued that the emigrant Irish can be found in all corners of the globe. Determined to pin down mythical tales of his own clan history, Pete is thrust into a world-wide adventure that reveals an unsettled and poignant history, while unearthing a good pint in the most unexpected locations.
From the Holy Ground of Cork harbour, he travels to Gibraltar and Morocco, then onwards to New York, Tasmania, Montana, and the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat, before finally reaching the remote Alaskan township of McCarthy, with its population of just 14 people and a lot more bears.

The narrator's accents leave something to be desired but by the end you're will him on.
Highly recommended.
A great listen

The trouble is with the reader. OK, so his voice does actually sound not unlike that of the late lamented Pete McCarthy, but there are two very real problems that making listen to it a real chore. One is when he attempts accents; he almost always makes a mess of it, especially the Dublin accent - I'm from Dublin, so I should know. And the other is his *awful* pronunciation of many Irish words. Doheny, uileann, Drogheda, Cavan, Anthenry, bodhran and many, many others are all utterly mangled. It jars horribly. I am very surprised that the producers of this otherwise excellent audiobook didn’t get some Irish people in to correct him!
Great writing, annoying perfromance...

As is mentioned in other reviews the narration is very lazy when it comes to place names and the accents are.. pretty dreadful.
This doesn’t take away from McCarthy’s beautiful book and lovely attitude. RIP.
A wonderful journey which never relents
