About this listen

A richly absorbing tale of the lives and loves of the river folk.

For 12-year-old Mary Ann Clark life has always been tough. The pretty daughter of a wife-beating drunk, it is no surprise that she has grown up afraid of her own shadow. That is until 'Battling Bessie Ruddick' takes the young girl under her wing and into the heart of her bustling family.

Growing into an attractive young woman, Mary Ann yearns to be loved and when her affection for Bessie's son, Dan, is finally returned and she becomes a skipper's wife. But the arduous life aboard ship is clearly not for her and only the arrival of a daughter, Lizzie, seems to hold the marriage together.

Yet, tragically, the family is torn apart when Mary Ann is seduced by the promise of a happier life. Although bewildered by her mother's disappearance, it is now up to Lizzie to help her father. For she, unlike Mary Ann, has inherited Dan's love of the river. But then, disturbingly, her life starts to follow the same pattern as her mother's . . .

There seem to be more camaraderie in those days.

Would you consider the audio edition of The River Folk to be better than the print version?

I suffer with Migraine and had to stop reading for few years. Was heart breaking I loved my books. Someone gave me a Tape with story on, was good but not convenient or much choice.... Then someone said try Audio Books on line free download. Again they were soo much more convenient but again not so many novels, then I found AUDIBLE.CO.UK . Whoop Whoop now I can read near enough, whatever, whenever, wherever...... Audible takes the strain from your eyes whilst reading..

What did you like best about this story?

The seemingly authenticity, made u feel u could go up North and see and speak to the people .

Have you listened to any of Patricia Gallimore’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Not yet !

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh and cry and a feeling of loss of the past.

Any additional comments?

Great Book, hope to be reading a lot more. Cheers

Watery Fall but Great & Uplifting

Where does The River Folk rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is good but is one of my favourites even though Margaret Dickinson is one of my favourite authors.

Which character – as performed by Patricia Gallimore – was your favourite?

Mary-Anne and Lizzie are 2 of my favourite characters probably because they play main roles

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me sigh when you get the impression when a main character dies.

Any additional comments?

This book has it's highs and also it's lows but also has ongoing romances which is hard to follow as to who is who. But all in all a really great book and hard to leave alone it makes you keep coming back to listen to some more of the romance.
