The novel that inspired the epic new movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy.

Hugh Glass isn’t afraid to die. He’s done it once already.

Rocky Mountains, 1823

The trappers of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company live a brutal frontier life. Hugh Glass is one of the most respected men in the company, an experienced frontiersman and an expert tracker.
But when a scouting mission puts Glass face-to-face with a grizzly bear, he is viciously mauled and not expected to survive. Two men from the company are ordered to remain with him until his inevitable death. But, fearing an imminent attack, they abandon Glass, stripping him of his prized rifle and hatchet.

As Glass watches the men flee, he is driven to survive by one all-consuming desire: revenge. With shocking grit and determination, he sets out on a three-thousand-mile journey across the harsh American frontier, to seek revenge on the men who betrayed him.

The Revenant is a remarkable tale of obsession and the lengths that one man will go to for retribution.

Movie could outshine the book

For starters I haven't seen the film - yet. It's on my list and the book hasn't changed my resolve to see it.

The Revenant focuses on one man and the tough environment he finds himself abandoned in. The setup is good, the characters are believable and the plot is solid but for whatever reason I found myself disappointed with the sum of the parts. Perhaps the build up was better than the climax and thus left me feeling like it could have ended better.

Something Hollywood might address?

Book before the film

I made the mistake of listening to this book prior to watching the film. Consequently the film barely held my attention! The bonus superb, particularly the authors noted st the end telling the truth behind the story.

Great Story

I really enjoyed listening to this audiobook which is very different from the book which is the usual case, not in a bad way though. It was interesting at the end to hear that some of the story was actually non fiction with fiction written in.

Some of the characters were in fact non fiction and the character building in this audiobook was good enough to know some of the backgrounds of their lives.

The narration was spot on with the narrator able to differentiate the voices of the characters and handled accents and different languages perfectly.

If you like me enjoyed the movie this is based on you’d like this tale though it is quite different than the movie which usually happens. Highly recommend this audiobook who loved the movie.

Raw and beautiful

Man at his worst. Man at his best. The story has stayed with me: an individual thought returning unexpectedly.

Gripping

Fully excellent. I haven't read/listened to many historical novels before and I was worried I might find it boring or uninteresting but that wasn't the case here. It is a very gripping and entertaining listen. I haven't seen the film yet so I can not compare but if its half as good as the book it should be enjoyable.

Into the unknown

I found the hole thing fascinating and descriptively evocative and has pecked my curiosity. I think it stands as a very good fictional novel, but the author has researched the subject it seem very very well

Material for a movie

Two comments from previous reviewers probably sum this up for me:
1 - the ending was a bit naff
2 - the movie was probably better

It's really just about "last man standing". The imagery is good, and there is clearly great material for Hollywood to build on - although I imagine they would have beefed up the ending somewhat. I kept waiting for the big reveal, or the grand finale- it never seemed to happen. It was just one long slog for poor Mr Glass...... Who knew so much death and drama could track one man and those who happened to be his travelling companions along the way.

The bit I found most interesting was the author's historical note at the end - where the back stories/ futures of some of the other characters were filled in. .... no spoilers here ....

Not sure I will bother with the movie though - I'm guessing it involves a lot of blood and snow?
