About this listen

"There are only two reasons a nonseer would see a spirit on St. Mark's Eve," Neeve said. "Either you're his true love... or you killed him."

It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive. Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them - not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her. His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can't entirely explain. He has it all - family money, good looks, devoted friends - but he's looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she's not so sure anymore.

From Maggie Stiefvater, the best-selling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we've never been before.

I wasn't expecting to get this hooked on a teenage adventure book. Loved the discoveries, the character developments and feel of curiosity that raised as the story unfolded. A well knitted combination of the fantastic and the mundane world, which makes it all credible.

Wonderful and unexpected!

Would you listen to The Raven Boys again? Why?

I'd certainly read it again, but I'm not sure about listening to it. Having a narrator with this style of older voice for this story didn't fit at all..

Who was your favorite character and why?

How am I supposed to decide?! They're all great and I just want them to be happy :,)

Would you be willing to try another one of Will Patton’s performances?

I may not have listened far enough to get used to the narrator but I just couldn't match the story and its characters up with Patton's voice. I'm sure he'd be excellent in another style of book (like horror or thriller cause I felt very uncomfortable at times listening to him), yet I felt his voice REALLY didn't fit the story and the age of its characters, but I guess that's just personal opinion. I probably won't be listening to any more of his performances as his style just doesn't work with me, I'm sure there will be people who like his narrations and fair play to them, it's just not my cup of tea that's all.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Fortune telling, birds and teenagers in distress.

Any additional comments?

I might see if I can give it another go but the slow pace at times really bugged me as well.

Fab story! I just couldn't deal with the narrator.

I’d already read all the series and loved it but listening to this was just a surreal and wonderful experience bought to vivid life by the most amazing reading voice .ever.

What a ride!!! 😮

This was actually a re-read for me since I wanted to continue with the series. I read this book back in 2017 and is still amazing as I remember it.

Maggie is a great writer and I simply love her works!

can't wait to dive into the next one.

Amazing!

It took me a while to get into this and to get used to the narrator but once I did the story started to grip. There were some moments that were genuinely eerie, particularly when listening at night, and I liked the combination of the mythical and the everyday. The background and characters really grew on me and I'm keen to hear what happened to them next.

Intriguing story

The narration was not for me, the voice was too old for what was supposed to be teenage boys, and the Welsh was horrific. If a story has a word in another language the narrator should make an effort to pronounce it correctly, it was offensive the way he pronounced Glyndwr, who might I add is a hugely famous Welsh figure and deserves the respect of having his name said correctly!

Good story, not the right narrator.

Loved this story. Gripped from the beginning until the end. It was an very interesting journey getting to know the characters and the secrets floating in the story. Well written with a fantastic audio narration from Will Patton. Look forward to starting the second book and learning more.

I cannot describe how much joy Maggie’s books have brought to me over the years. They are full of wonder and whimsy and I implore everyone to listen to Will Pattons inspired renditions of them, I doubt anyone else will come close to their ability to dream these characters into being.

These books are works of creative genius
