About this listen

Nothing is quite as it seems in Victorian high society, in the twisty and original new novel from the author of THE HOUSEKEEPERS...

'Sheer delight from start to finish' Janice Hallett
'Hay keeps the pages turning and the reader guessing' The Times
'As fiendishly clever as its characters' Jennie Godfrey

They whisper her name in every corner of town. The lady with a hundred faces, a thousand lives.
Five moves, five days - for such are the rules of her game.

1898. Quinn Le Blanc, London's most talented con woman, has five days to pull off the seemingly impossible: trick an eligible duke into marriage and lift a fortune from the richest family in England.

Masquerading as a wealthy debutante, Quinn is the jewel of the season. Her brilliant act opens doors to the grand drawing rooms and lavish balls of high society - and propels her into the inner circle of her target: the corrupt, charismatic Kendals.

But as she spins in and out of their world, Quinn becomes tangled in a dangerous web of love, lies and loyalty. The Kendal family all have secrets of their own, and she may not be the only one playing a game of high deception...

Great characterisation. Read with joyful conviction. Who knew all this went on? Reveals a layer of London we probably all wish existed then and hope exists now

Believeably bonkers

Came across this book by chance, haven’t listened to any other books by the author. The story is compelling, different, with a new twist around each corner. Was a bit sad when it finished, as I wanted more of the same.

Such an interesting story

Great performance marred only by the annoying pronunciation of ‘schedule’ the American way. Call me a pedant.

Minor flaw

Absolutely brilliant from start to finish! Highly recommend this book - so many twists and turns keeps you guessing all the way to the end.

Genius!

I wasn't ever convinced or gripped by the story and persisted only because a good friend whose recommendations I trust suggested it. Well read on the whole by Polly Edsell, but far too many mispronounced words (tumult, antecedent, parse, ha'penny...). Surely professionals reading audiobooks have a duty to look up how to pronounce relatively simple English words rather than just guess. This is all too common and I find it really detracts from the pleasure of listening and stops me in my tracks each time. Are there not editors to check such things and ensure corrections are made?

Not really convincing; too many mispronunciations

patiently waited for this installment from Alex Hay, after the last, and my only disappointment is that it came to an end, without another to the ready. This was perfect and full of such delicious twists and turns. Superb superb superb.

splendid

Really enjoyed this tale of blackmail and corruption where the Queen of Fives is overshadowed and outplayed by her nemesis!

Great story, Great narrator
