About this listen
In the future, the world is at war. For the last decade, King Lazuli of the Eastern Empire has systematically taken over the world. No one knows much about him other than a series of impossible facts: he cannot die, he has not aged since the conflict began, and he wants to rule the world.
All Serenity Freeman has known is bloodshed. War has taken away her mother, her home, her safety. As the future emissary of the Western United Nations, the last autonomous region of the globe, she is responsible for forging alliances where she can.
Surrender is on the horizon. The king can taste it; Serenity feels it deep within her bones. There is no other option. Now the two must come face to face. For Serenity, that means confronting the man who's taken everything from her. For the king, it means meeting the one woman he can't conquer. But when they meet, something happens. Cruelty finds redemption.
Only in war, everything comes with a price. Especially love.

⤐ Overall.
Strictly speaking, The Queen of All that Dies does not sort itself into the genre of dark romance. However, if the relationship between the love interests is determined mainly by one abducting/buying the other in a trade, the groundwork is pretty solid in my eyes.
Naturally, I was ready to bash this book like a pinata. But the slow shift of both Serenity's and her superiors' alliances was extremely intriguing. I loved how the line between good and bad began to blurr until it seemed to be barely there anymore. Although, undoubtedly, Montez is the evilest man in this game of thrones, others come quite close which is the reason I was so hot and bothered for his and Serenetiy's relationship to develop.
If I had to pick one thing I deeply disliked, I'd definitely say the most unbearable aspect of this audiobook was the excrutiating French/Swiss German accent the narrator chose for Montez. I can see where the reasoning behind that might be coming from. Thing is, this accent is about as sexy as a date in between the confinements of an insect farm. In case my - admittedly, imperfect metaphor/simile - doesn't quite catch: NOT SEXY. NOT AT ALL.
Which made the idea of Montez as the sexy overlord of the world appear very foreign to me. I might be going out on a limb here, but if one is able to conquer the entire world, I expect him to conquer at least some sort of standard English along side of it.
⤐ What’s happening.
‘‘You were able to kill him,’ Will said. You, a girl. That’s what he meant. Like owning a vagina made me inferior in some fundamental way.’
Serenity knows nothing but fight and kill. Her organisation of states - the WUN - is the last thing standing between the King Montez Lazuli and his regiency over the entire globe. When she is sent to negotiate the peace talks alongside her father, she realises two things:
1. her superiors sending her there was not out of shortage of adequate staff
2. she's not as immune to the man who killed her mother as she thought she would be3. her functioning as bait for the King to take in exchange for what the WUN want from the negotiations is working...

4 STARS. Would stay up beyond my typical hours to finish it. I found some minor details I didn't like, agree with or lacked in some kind but overall, this was enjoyable and extraordinary.
4 STARS, as surprised as you are ★★★★✩
