About this listen

The 150 Psalms contain some of the most inspiring lines in the Old Testament: Psalm 23 "The Lord is My Shepherd" and Psalm 121 "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills". Yet few know them as a set, and this recording, in Alex Jennings' clear performance, allows us to consider them as a whole. They are not all uplifting and comfortable. Many involve darker sentiments of revenge or punishment; many appear to be by David or about David; others are To the chief Musician upon Gittith. Their variety is part of their strength and their power, especially in the magisterial language of the King James Bible used here. They are presented with English choral music from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Editor reviews

Alex Jennings's delivery is more like a skilled recitation than a narration. Jennings understands the structure of the Psalms as shaped in the well-known language of the King James Bible. Every word is delivered crisply, and his voice is dignified and always respectful. Transitions are bridged with brief excerpts of English choral music from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The combination is beautiful, meditative, and unified.

Absolute gem

Beautiful narration, perfectly weighted. Wonderful to listen to the Psalms in the Old English of the King James Bible. Just exactly what I was looking for! These precious words accompany my long runs, walks and cycle rides, enhancing the surrounding scenery.

an excellent performance

Superb narration, clear diction and excellent phrasing and intonation. I particularly liked the snippets of choral performances of psalms interspersed throughout.

Excellent reading, very hard to use on Audible

Alex Jennings reads very well and the translation is the Authorised Version (King James Version) which has high literary and historic value. The only problem is that Audible does not split the 150 Psalms which makes them impossible to navigate on Audible. On CD, each Psalm has its own track number, so you can go to the Psalm you want to hear. But on Audible, the Psalms are lumped together, all 150 psalms being divided into just 4 chapters - so you cannot jump to any particular psalm. This means you can only listen to them from start to finish. That is not how most people listen to the psalms. This is just laziness as the CD does split into each psalm
